I have purches in Luigi's cage that look like branches. They say they are better for their feet because they are different sizes. Anyone have any idea about them. It definately looks more like a tree in his cage!

Willie has one of those that he got as a gift from a forum member.

The more perch sizes and textures, the better for the little birdie feet.

I have a couple of branches from petco that actually connects to its side.. my birds love them and i actually have branches from my trees outside.. they like to bite on the branches and pick at them.. make sure no bugs or deseases of course.. but the more natual i feel would be better for them while they are in the cage.. just my opinion.. hope this helps........

You want to have numerous sized perches available, as well as differnt textures, this helps keep the birds feet exercised and will help prevent arthritis in their feet later in life. The natural wood branches are great all my birds have them in their cages. You might also check into giving them a rock perch as well.

go to http://www.birdontherocks.com/ and check them out. It gives them a chance to totally stretch their feet, its great for helping keep toenails under control.

I saw those perches at PetSmart last weekend but sticks from the yard would work? It would sure be cheaper. laugh.gif I think I'll try that after I make darned sure there aren't any bugs on them.
Casey's Mom
Casey has a few different manzanita perches (a couple regular branches and a completely flat one that gives her feet a break) that we bought from Parrotdise Perch. She also had some grapevine ones from a friend but she was TERRIFIED of them! rolleyes.gif So we stopped using grapevine...

Birds need lots of different types of perches for healthy feet. Just using one or two different types is like us wearing the same shoe for our whole life; boring and uncomfortable! smile.gif

You have to make sure they are from a safe tree... there are many lists online you can google that will show a list of safe and unsafe woods. There are many poisonous trees, so be careful! wink.gif Once you find a safe one you'll have to clean it properly (bake, bleach, etc.) to make sure there are no other bird germs etc. that could make your baby sick.

Maybe I ought to just break down and buy PetSmart's. Our yard is full of twigs and we never, ever spray our trees or anything else, which is why our yard looks like a jungle laugh.gif . The first twig I found on the ground was already dry and I'm pretty sure it came from the maple tree it was under, and it didn't have any other bird poo on it. Maple is on the safe list.

My Guys love real branches and love to pick off the bark...
