Full Version: What Does He Have Against Hair Ties?

Clyde is again trying diligently to chew my hair tie in half. He loves to play with hair and squeal and that's okay, but he gets a little too wound up so usually I put it in a ponytail or up on my head in a clip. If I use an elastic hair tie, he will sit on my neck and chomp on it until he's got it chewed off. He's also very big on taking my glasses away from me, and then he plays keepaway with them. Usually I wear my contacts when I'm playing with him. Amazing, the things we go through for these critters! laugh.gif I tried to find something else to use to play tug with him since he likes it so much but the first thing I tried was yarn and that scared the poor baby, and I haven't thought of anything else. Does anyone else's bird like playing tug and keepaway? What do you use?

My Gizmo does the exact same thing to my Wife's hair ties. We haven't found anything else that he likes as much as those. He will pull them right off her head then chew it till he cuts it in half, after that he loses interest in it and throws it. LOL

Hey!
My grey used to do the same thing so i got a toilet roll holder (bit left whe n the toilet rolls finished) and i placed it in the bottom of his cage! once he decided to investigate he loved it! used to carry it back to perch and happily shred til he got to a hair bobble and then butcher that and carry on to the next one! it worked a treat!!

I'll try the TP cardboard and see if he'll chew on that. I gave him some paper towel a while back to chew up and he did a little, but lost interest. He loses interest in an elastic hair tie the moment he's got it chewed off. The joy is in the journey and not the destination, I suppose. laugh.gif What he needs is a chew toy like I give my Lab. Do they make little balls for parrots? Or something equivalent to a rubber bone? I haven't seen anything like that in the bird aisle at Petsmart, and based on what Clyde seems to enjoy most, that's what he needs, not the dangly bead-and-bell sorts of toys they make for parrots. He ignores those completely. He lives with two dogs and my husband jokingly refers to him as our "funny-looking dog," so maybe he needs dog toys! laugh.gif

Our lovies do that same thing to my hair ties. Our female cat chews on them as well (not in my hair of course). I noticed that when I switched to the type with no metal piece, they became more interested. I know the lovies do it because they see an odd object in my hair and instinct tells them to get rid of the invader.

petrie never has chewed on my hair ties, but when I get him out to play I sometimes take flourescent straws (the bendy kind) smile.gif and use them to play with him. he likes them because we can play tug of war, or he can take them to his side of the play area away from me, as well as build stuff! like i said, its not really the same, but it might keep him interested for a while! lol... hope you get it figured out! good luck!*

I usually wear contacts, but if I happen to be wearing my glasses, Clyde likes to take them away from me and he doesn't like giving them back. laugh.gif They're wire-rimmed, so they're lightweight and he just takes them off my face and hangs onto them playing keepaway. I'm going to get him some cheap sunglasses of his own, maybe kid-sized, so he can carry them around to his little heart's content.

Elliot loves to chew hair ties so much we buy him his own pack. He got spree started on it now too. I don't wear them that often but if they are in my hair he takes them right out and spends time breaking them apart. He got hair ties in his stocking this past year for Christmas! He was so excited!
