Hi my name is Ashley I just adopted a 4 week old baby quaker from a breeder I am hand feeding her 3 times a day she seems to be doing good I'm keeping her warm by heating pad partly under her box shes in. she seems to be getting more green feathers everyday I named her Star. one of my questions is am I allowed to be holding her at this young age because I have and she seems to squak more while im holding her as if trying to talk to me. I sing and talk to her most of the day and she sleeps all night with out making a single peep till I uncover her. I do have a few pictures I would love to share. any information about what I could better is welcomed thanks!!!

Holding her is good but I would also give her plenty of time in her box for baby naps.

Also, remember that right now, you're creating habits that you'll have to live with for a loooong time. smile.gif

smile.gif Welcome Ashley!!! Star is adorable! I'm new to the Quaker Parrot too, so I'm not one to give advice, but I would think it's important for you to hold her now! My baby Seamus is almost 6 weeks old now and the woman I'm buying him from wants me to wait until he's around 12 wks old until I bring him home dry.gif . But she encourages me to come and hold him and talk to him as often as I can. I go every day and just hang out with him! I get concerned, too, when he squawks and carries on while I'm holding him. I keep thinking I'm holding him wrong or I'm hurting him, but Pat says he's just excited to see me! After a couple of minutes, he calms down and settles in and ends up falling asleep! When it's time for me to go and I move to put him back with his siblings, he grabs my wrist or my shirt and holds on with his beak (like he's saying don't put me back, mom wub.gif !!!
Anyway, enjoy Star and enjoy watching how fast she'll develop! Seamus actually started to perch the other day, so I'm working on "step up" and he's actually doing it!!! biggrin.gif

Can't wait to bring him home!!!

did your breeder teach you how to feed her correctly?Lots of things can go wrong with an innexperienced owner, especially becuase you have never owned a bird before. They might not be willing but you should see if your breeder will take Star back to finish the weaning, just to be safe. Otherwise research research research, there are lots of training videos for feeding quakers on youtube.
Seamus O'Malley
Even though I seem like I'm not happy about not having Seamus right now, I know, it's for the best. blush.gif I am a single mom (of an autistic child) and I cannot devote so much important time to a baby bird. I want to make sure he gets the proper feedings and human interaction when I can't be around. But I DO go and visit him as much as I can. I even changed my route to work so I can stop in to spend time with him.
My boyfriend has his own business, so he's available to be home for my daughter when I'm working, so there's usually someone here 24/7. I know Pat talks to Seamus and cuddles with him and his siblings at night and she's getting him into the "habit" of being around a loving, caring person. I'll be able to take off from where Pat left, when Seamus comes home. He'll have his "personal" time while I'm at work, but still be comforted by the fact that another human is here and looking after him.
I'm hoping that Seamus O'Malley will help my daughter Danielle make some speech breakthroughs, but even if he doesn't, he's gonna be here for ME. If Danielle doesn't "bond" with Seamus, she'll keep on doing her "thing" and I'll have a new love in life!
Does any of my rambling make sense?!?!? mellow.gif

Arg, drives me nuts when breeders sell unweaned birds to inexperienced hand feeders. To me, it's just bad, bad business (not too mention a whole lot of laziness on the breeder's part).

If you have any questions regarding the hand feeding and weaning, please, please feel free to ask. We have several experienced hand feeders and breeders on the forum who will be able o assist you. Hand feeding can be hard, so don't hesitate to ask wink.gif

Welcome biggrin.gif

I am currently hand rearing my now 8 week 6days old baby!
My breeder only allowed me to take him as i have weaned before!
The noise when you are handling them is probably asking for food! mine always asked for food even when he wasnt hungry! they will just eat and eat!!
mine liked a feed and then to snuggle in my hand and sleep for a while! the warmth i think he liked! but now hes just an explorer and down to one feed and hes eating seed! ive only had him since 6weeks old and it isnt easy!! infact its quite demanding as at that age they should really be with their flock!!
explain exactly how you feed him? spoon feed? have you shaped the spoon? syringe feeding? are you going slow enough? are you checking his crop before and after feeding? what food are you feeding him?
your breeder should have given you all the information you need and really shouldnt have asked you to wean if you have never done it before???
congrats on ur quaker and any questions dont be scared to ask, even if you think they sound really dumb they may be important
