Quaker Parrots Forum > Welcome! > Introductions

I went back and forth trying to decide between a quaker and green cheek conure. After lots of reading I decided on the quaker parrot. I will be able to get him in about four weeks. I hope I made the right choice. I am a first time owner so am trying to learn as much as I can. I do not mind noise but will the quaker be to loud for my apt neighbors. I have already named him "Truman."

Hello and welcome! I don't think you'll be disappointed in the quaker at all.
I love my little Eli. He surprises me all the time. He's 1 yr old now and it took him awhile to understand toys and things but he's so much fun .... I have to watch myself so I kiss my husband and son first when I come home from work, instead of running to Eli! tongue.gif

Glad you've joined us!

Hi there and welcome to the forum smile.gif

When I was looking to add another parrot to my household, I was torn between a Quaker and a Green Cheek. The Quaker won over, mostly because I found a fairly local breeder (2+ hour drive each way). About a year later, I added a Green Cheek biggrin.gif

I find the noise level isn't too bad. Quakers can be loud, but usually it's during regular waking hours, so I don't think it will bother the neighbours. I live in an apartment and never had a single complaint from my neighbours.

Seamus O'Malley
smile.gif Hello and welcome, Tim! And Truman wink.gif !!!
We are in similar situations. I'm VERY new to birds and I couldn't decide between a Conure and the Quaker. Apparently Conures are pretty noisy and are more "athletic" or better at performing, compared to the Quaker, who's both athletic and verbal (usually better at talking-not necessarily noisy).
I put a deposit down on my Seamus O'Malley about 3 weeks ago, but I still have to wait another 3-4 wks to bring him home dry.gif . I go every day and hold him and talk to him and I really think he's getting to know me! When I first pick him up, he chirps and squawks ( I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong, or I'm hurting him!), then he settles down and usually falls asleep. When it's time to leave and I make a move to put him down, he grabs onto my wrist or my shirt!
I DO feel more comfortable letting the bird store owner handle the feeding with the syringe! Plus she can make sure Seamus and his sibs get fed regularly. I'm also happy that Seamus is being exposed to all kinds of noises (the other birds in the store), different people coming up and looking at him (Pat won't let ANYONE pick up the babies...only her or the other 2 buyers), and she makes sure that each baby has "alone" time with her. (It's not a big "chain" type pet store. She only sells birds, and only gets them from local breeders). She practices "step up" and the fids have "flying lessons" each day. Seamus' oldest sib started flying today, so Pat thinks Seamus (the youngest of the flock) will fly in the next few days biggrin.gif !
Sorry to ramble, but I'm excited about my new love in life!. Hope you're able to spend time with your fid!
You'll find that the folks here are VERY friendly and MORE than helpful...it's all about the birds!

Good luck with Truman and send pics!!!

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif Congrats on choosing a Quaker (fantastic choice!) they totally have the 'big bird attitude' in a small package! biggrin.gif wub.gif

I don't think Casey is that loud, there are a few 'normal' loud times during the day (in the morning and evening) but I don't think it'll cause problems with your neighbours. wink.gif

Welcome, don't hesitate to ask any questions!!

Welcome to the forum! You will fall dearly in love with your little QP Im sure. The do make noise but I live in an APT myself and havent had any complaints plus the noise is not that loud. It seems loud when you're in there with them But our little one makes noise as soon as she hears the keys in the door kinda like a dog (lol) she'll start making noises and saying "step up" before we even walk in and from the other side of the door its not that loud.

It will be fine in your APT
Congratulations!!
