*sigh*
Monet started plucking a week and a half ago, just on her leggies mostly. Bill and I took her to the vet, along with a fecal culture, but we were hopefully that it was just an allergy to a new treat she had gotten. She appeared to stop plucking after we took away the treat, and I was hopeful she was well.
Well, the fecal culture came back. She has a resistant strain of a staph infection. The vet is concerned about where she got it, since usually it comes from humans but neither Bill or I have been sick. I think she may have gotten it from Pablo (he had this once before). I'm going to talk to my mom, who is a nurse, to see if Bill and I should be tested as carriers, just to be safe.
It is resistant most meds, but the vet is trying a medication that worked on Pablo. If that doesn't work, we will send the fecal culture to a human lab where they test for some different meds.
Please keep Monet in your thoughts! Her weight is good and she's acting normal, except for the plucking, but I know that once she ACTS sicks things will be pretty bleak.

Thanks everyone!
She has to get shots in her tummy! Ouch... she is SO mad at me right now. Of course, once I pull out the peanut butter (a special treat for when she gets shots) she temporarily forgives me

MRSA are terrible things to deal with! If it is gut related try giving regular doses of probiotic - you can get it in powder form for birds, or yoghurt. It will replenish the natural flora in her gut and help to combat other nasties like ecoli from setting up shop as soon as the antibiotics stop. It works really well. Interesting she was picking. I am learning that picking is more health related than I thought.

Becky, I hope everything works out for Monet. That sure sounds scary. All I know is if I was sick I'd want
you to look after me. She's in the best hands.

Monet is taking her meds like a champ. She's actually much easier to medicate than Pablo because she squirms, but the moment it is over she's more interested in the treat.
Am I getting treats yet:

Poor fiddo...having had Mrsa Myself...ick.

It can come from anywhere we're finding out, I was talking to a friend of mine who is a nurse, and he was saying that many people are ending up being MRSA positive and not knowing about it and I'm sure the same happens with critters too, poor Monet. I'm really sorry she's sick.

She's doing well. She takes her tummy shots well and is still acting fine... except that she is EXTRA loud and obnoxious. And I'm having a rough week, so I'm alternating between being excessively over-affectionate to her (oh! my poor mo-mo. monet is soooo sweet) to getting so FRUSTRATED with her screaming I want to strangle her... really strangle her. I think maybe my own emotions about other things are making her more screamy though, so it's hard to fault her. Not that I don't when she's splitting my ear drums!
But so far so good. Let's hope these meds do the trick! I won't know for quite a awhile though. We have to finish our ten-day round and then wait a week to send in the fecal culture and another week to get it back.
I don't handle waiting well. *sigh*

Is this possible to have come from the parrents of the birds? Just a thought. Keep me posted personally if you like. If you need any help please let me know I will do what I can!

Thank you so much Cheryl!
She either got it from Pablo, or Bill or I are a carrier. If the med that helped Pablo helps her, it's almost certain she got it from him, and she seems to be doing well so... fingers crossed!

Just checking in for an update! How is Monet doing?
GeorgiaOnMyMind
Jul 19 2008, 03:30 PM
Well, she finished her shots.
The feathers are growing back on her leggies, which is what alerted to the problem, so I hope that's a good sign...
Right now we're just waiting to be able to test her and see if it all comes back ok!

I'm curious Becky...did you give her the shots?
GeorgiaOnMyMind
Jul 19 2008, 06:35 PM
Yes I did. Not fun, though she's MUCH easier to give shots to than Pablo.
The vet showed us how, and I've had to do it for Pablo (our sickly boy) three times now so Monet was a piece of cake.
On a worrisome note... I think she started plucking her legs again today. *sigh*

Glad to hear Monet has stopped the plucking and hope it's up hill all the way. My quaker has been plucking over a year now and has been tested for many things, but I"m not sure about staph. I'll have to find out and have him tested. I would love to find a cure for his plucking. I just got his sock buddy yesturday and am not looking forward to putting it on. LOL
