Just thought I'd gaiv an update. Santi went to the vet on monday for a bacterial infection in her crop. While she was there she got an anti-inflammatory steroid injection and a antibiotic injection. Since then she has improved astronomically but has been pretty reluctant about taking her oral antibiotics.

Last night I caught her vomitting and again this morning, quite a bit. So I called the vet and he thinks its best if I give her injections instead. We are heading out to pick them up in about half an hour. Hopefully these help as much as the first injection.

Awww, poor Santi. But maybe the injection will help. I was almost afraid to open your post when I saw the words "bad news." Keep at it!

She had her first injection just before(which stressed us out more than her!) and now she is having a nap.

So sorry to hear that Santi is going through all of that.
We wish you the best and hope that the injections
take care of Santi and make her all better.

Good luck and take care. Keep us posted

I hope Santi gets better, one step backwards isn't too bad as long as they are taking more than one step forwards. Thinking of you and Santi and hoping for the best. Hugs

Please ask the vet about metal poisoning ...he will need to do blood tests and mayb an xray too...

Majj
some links ...you would be surprised how many things are metal and not good for fids even bird toys ..I will only use Stainless steel on any toys and remove anything from toys that is not...

ohmy.gif Poor Santi.. I shall be crossing my fingers as well that he picks up real soon, hang in there.
Kyla+Santi
Majj, the vet found a whole load of bacteria in her crop so thats what he is treating for but I will ask whether he thinks that metal poisoning is possible. I will tell you what he says.
Thanks heaps for the concern and well wishes everyone smile.gif.

Hi Kyla, hang in there. You are doing really well and you are an excellent nurse.

Can you by any chance get someone to teach you how to crop feed? This way you could administer the antibiotics straight down and past the sensitive throat area. This technique can save lives and be a good skill in the future.

Try to get some of those probiotics into her as well. They will help her tummy to feel full and well.
Majj
Oh ! I must have missed that Kyla ....Just trying to figure out why your little one is so sick. If you know what it is then the vet will be treating Santi with the best possible treatment I am sure ..chin up its very draining emotionally when your loved fid is sick...
Hugs

Majj, thanks for the concern and trying your best to help, it is much appreciated.

Joseph, the vet has given me injectable penicillin instead, just to make sure she gets it all as he was also worried that she might not be absorbing it all. I don't know if I'd be confident going all the way down into her crop(that is what you are talking about with crop feeding, right?)bu I would like to know how to do it, for emergencies and stuff.

Again thank you for all the support.

It's a powerful skill even though it's very scary at first. But that's good that she is getting the injections anyway. I hope she's feeling better soon. The injections are more effective than in the water. And probiotics will help her gut flora to make a comeback after the penicillin as it will strip everything out.

I'm so sorry about Santi! I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers! Please keep us updated when you can!

So Santi has made major improvements again after having three injections. I know she is still sick and is just getting better at hiding that fact because she is feeling a bit better. Does anyone know how to tell when she is better enough to go back in her cage(I have her in a heated box at night and on her stand next to a lamp during te day)? After her course of antibiotics is through?

The funny thing is that she loves the probiotics that are mixed with lorikeet mix but she wasn't tricked when I tried to put her antibiotics with lorikeet mix, they are smart little buggers.
Kattastrophe
I am so glad that Santi is improving. You are a brave mom giving those shots. I would have a hard time with that. Santi is lucky to have you!
Kyla+Santi
So we are on our last day of shots and I would go as far as to say that Santi is in the clear, she hasn't thrown up since the first day of injections and she has been moved back into her normal cage because she couldn't stand being stuck in the hospital box. She seems to be doing well smile.gif biggrin.gif
Cantab
That is some good news, she must feel better if she wanted out of the hosp cage, a good sign I guess, well done, and keep up the good work Santi. wink.gif
cindylou_38
Thats great news!!!
Majj
Great news....Could the vet give you any tips on the cause (so you can avoid her getting sick again) or was it unexplainable..?? fingers crossed no more scares for Mum.. (hugs)
Casey's Mom
That's fantastic Kyla! smile.gif I'm so glad Santi is feeling much better! biggrin.gif

Thanks for the update! smile.gif

Well I'm pretty sure Santi is out of the woods now. The vet said that the most likely cause of a bacterial infection in the crop is from eating/chewing on another birds poo but that is impossible as the only other bird I have is in another room and they do not share play stands or sit on the same places in the house.

He also said it is possible from rodents, so I think I'm going to have to double check we don't have any and if we do, set up some traps/poison. Or possibly set my cat loose in the roof(only joking, I would never do that)Does anyone know of a human way to get rodents out of a house?

She had her first bath in 2 weeks today, she really seemed to enjoy it. I think it will help get rid of some food that had dried to her cheek feathers and I couldn't completely get rid of.
Nikki-n-Shane
Good job Santi (And mom!) So glad to hear things are looking up. I don't know how to get rid of rodents but maybe someone will help soon. Good luck

My mom used to have a 'sonic deterrent' thing that was supposed to keep the little critters out of the house. I don't really know if it worked for real, but I do know she kept it plugged in all the time in the cabin up north (where there are LOTS of mice dry.gif and I don't remember ever seeing any evidence of the little visitors when we weren't there ... It was not audible to humans and it didn't seem to bother the dog, but I don't remember seeing any mice ... or squirrels taking up residence under the roof either.

Can get them at the hardware store, or Lowe's or Home Depot I think. Good luck.

**Cats work well too!!! laugh.gif
Majj
Just make sure you have everything clean in Santi`s cage no old food left which could be a cause of growth for bacteria..wash dishes and toys often ,hopefully it was just a once of bit of bad luck.
Are you sure you have rodents ?? have you seen droppings or actually seen the critters ..??? Don`t use any sprays near Santi ...You can get Rat baits to slip under furniture and in cupboards but make sure its not where any other of your animals can get to it..

Good Luck how is the little man now..??
Kyla+Santi
I'm not sure that I have rodents but I would like to be prepared in case I do.

Santi is doing great, sitting on my shoulder trying sing. It is the cutest thing I have ever seen, she sits there singing one note at a time and bobbing her head up and down.
