Woodrow was hatched on September 5, 2005 in the state of Mississippi. I am his second owner. Before he came into my possession he belonged to a family with adult men and women as well as dogs and children. His favorite person in his old family was their 10 year old autistic son.
Woodrow has some aggression (possibly fear) issues that his new owner needs to be aware of and prepared for. On "Amey's Bite Scale" I would rate him between a Grade 1 and Grade 3 depending on the day and his mood. He does not bite "unprovoked" but what he considers to be provocation - hands going in the cage for cleaning, being taken in and out of the cage - are not things that are optional. Outside of these situations he is well behaved. I have done my best with him in the time that I've had him, but he needs a home experienced in parrot care and behavior.
He has a SMALL bald patch at the tip of his keel. I discussed this with his vet during his last wellness exam and she said it seemed to be due to an old injury. His former owners mentioned that he took a very bad fall and had to have his keel stitched up by the vet. It has not gotten any smaller or larger since I have had him, so I do not believe that he is picking at it. I do however suspect that he is either chewing off or accidentally breaking off the flight feathers on one of his wings, but he will not allow me to handle them so I can examine him more closely. When I first got him I made the terrible mistake of having our vet clip his wings and he did a terrible job of it. If Woodrow has a problem with his flight feathers then I believe it stems from that. I am of the opinion that he should never be clipped again - he can't fly very well (if at all) to begin with and clipping has done him more good then bad. I think it would do a lot for his confidence if he was taught how to fly... from what his former owners told me he has never really known how.
Woodrow is quite vocal and picks up new words very quickly. He currently has a vocabulary of about ten words and phrases that I can identify, and he "mumbles" several other words that I cannot quite make out consistently. His current favorite noise to make is a pitch perfect imitation of the floorboard in front of my office door, although he is also fond of "hey baby","Sarah", "hello" and "step up boy"! I believe that he would learn new words and phrases extremely quickly if someone were actively coaching him on it.
Woodrow is a fairly adaptive bird in terms of new objects and expirences. He loves new toys and usually starts playing with them immediately. He travels well and has no problem eating and drinking while on the road. He is affectionate but not overly so. He loves being rubbed and scratched around his ears and face, but everywhere else is hands off for him. He enjoys regular spray baths and especially loves it when you GENTLY squirt warm water into his mouth for him to drink.
Woodrow has had his yearly wellness exam and passed with flying colors. I can provide all appropriate veterinary paperwork, as well as a hatch certificate and contact information for his breeder. He has not been DNA sexed.
I am asking a rehoming fee of $800. Included in his adoption fee:
- 5 foot metal "playtop" cage with metal bowls - bowl stands have outside access
- plastic carpet guard to go under the cage
- collapsable plastic play stand
- smaller wire cage with perches and dishes - used as a travel cage
- an assortment of toys and perches in varying conditions
- his remaining food - currently working our way through a 20 lb bag of Zupreem FruitBlend
- 3+ books on parrots/African Greys
- a "Buddy Perch" - he absolutely hates it/is afraid of it but you may have more success with it then I have
- spray bottle for bathtime - he LOVES it and especially loves it when you gently pray warm water in his mouth
- all his vet paperwork
- hatch certificate and business card of his breeder
Woodrow is located in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I am NOT willing to ship him, and would prefer that any potential adopter be able to come visit him in person before committing to anything. I will only consider letting him go to someone who has previous experience with parrots. Woodrow is NOT a first time bird owner friendly bird.
If you have any questions about Woodrow or would like to see pictures, please PM me on these forums. I will gladly answer any questions you have to the best of my ability, and provide photographs of Woodrow, his cages, and anything else a potential adopter might like to see.
