Hi, I'm new to this forum and could use the help. I adopted a quaker from my daughter. She has a 6 yr. old son and the bird didn't like to be around the noise so she gave him to me. Well, he likes me even though he will occasionally bite me, but he usually doesn't want anyone around. I got him 2 days ago and he knew me from my daughter. I bought him a nice cage yesterday and put all of his favorite toys in the cage. Today, he hasn't let me touch him all day. If I go up to him, he'll purr, etc, but he won't let me pick him up. He seems happy. He whistles, and even said 'Good Boy" and its usually when I'm not in the room. He is molting and he has feathers missing from around his neck. I was told that he was abused by his first owners. What can I do to get the little guy used to us? And what can I do about his biting? I tried the putting a washrag around our fingers, but he hates that. Could it be the new cage that has him acting so strange today? Any help would be appreciated as I am new to quakers. Thank you!
I should add that I'm his third owner.

I'd say the biggest thing you can do is to give it more time. Even though he knew you before, his whole world has changed and he needs time to get used to it. Since he seems to like it when you talk to him try to spend time near the cage and talking quietly to him. Don't try to take him out of the cage or pet him, just talk.

Good luck!

Thank you! He did get on my finger tonight and was very lovable. Here's a question...when he's on my finger, he makes all kinds of sounds and every once in awhile, there's a "click" noise. What does that mean? He does that when he's acting friendly and "purrs". Thanks for any advice.

Talk very softly to this baby (even if he's not a BABY, he's still a "baby") with lots of love in your voice. My QP loves me to death and loves to cuddle but still bites a plug out of me now and then (even after 8 years).
Mine was given to me because her former owner just didn't want her any more, poor thing. I felt so bad for her and I love her to death, bites and all.
They need all the love and attention we have time to give them. Mine get so much, they are spoiled rotten because I am at home all day.
It does take a while, but this bird will know you care and will soon start to respond to that. Patience and kindness are the keys here wub.gif
