cool.gif Hello everyone! My name is Andrea. I have been using this website and many others, as a great source of info. Wanted to tell everyone thank you. Also, I wanted to share our little story with you guys.

I had been wanting a parrot so I did some research, and of course I chose the QP! biggrin.gif Pre-QP our household consisted of my fiancée, my self, and 4 dogs! Anyway, I got our 2 little guys from a reputable breeder here locally. 2 green, non sexed, little QPs. They are only 8 1/2 weeks old, and totally weaned. They are so precious!!

We brought our little guys home early Saturday afternoon. Setting up their big cage was a lot of fun. We have Frank and Bing so exciting!! laugh.gif The "boys" went gratefully into their large home. Then, I realized that these guys were very clumsy. I could not tell you why I did not expect that, with them being so young and all. huh.gif Duh! We had to go back and lower everything down to the bottom half of the cage. Then I felt better. They have no fear!!

The 1st and 2nd day went great. Practicing to step up, getting to know us, getting used to all of the dogs hanging around. Monday we were off to work. I finished early so when I got home around noon I called to schedule an apt to see a Certified Aviary Vet. It just so happens there is one just around the corner. They got us in for this Friday. I hang up the phone and not 10 minutes later Bing falls from the perch on the play area attached to the top of the cage to the bottom of the play area. I'm talking maybe 7 or 8 inch's. He gets up, wipes himself off, and starts back up the little latter, stops half way up, chews on a toy, and then makes his way over to the food bowl has a snack and then has a drink. I noticed that he was not tucking one of his wings under all of the way. excl.gif I called the Vet. office back and they squeezed us in.

Longer story short, Bing broke his little wrist! sad.gif He does not seem to be bothered by it. However, I am feeling pretty awful!!!!!! Everything in the cage has now been moved to the very bottom. To be honest I am petrified to let them out to play. I always put the dogs out and try to get them to play with me on the floor. They will not have it. They run toward the cage and try to climb up to the top where the play area is. I know that they are only following their instincts. I just don't know what to do. I don't want to keep them locked up in their cage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have been very stressed the past day and a half. I just don't want the little guys to hurt themselves anymore on my watch you know!! Bing looks like he is doing great, it's no big deal having his little wing wrapped up in a pretty, purple, little bandage. He and Frank eat like little piggies! How long will they be so clumsy? I wish they would stop that now. Bing weighed in at 85 grams at the office visit. About how big will they be when they are full grown?

Sorry about all of the questions, I know this is not the place for it. I am going to attatch a couple of pics for you to feast your eyes on some cut little babies.

Andrea

The cage is an HQ. I got a pretty good deal on it because the pans on it area a different color. biggrin.gif

He was such a good boy at the Vets. office. Never complained once while she had his wing out and was pushing and manipulating it. I was very surprised.

Hello and Welcome to the forum! Your babies are adorable! I'm glad you had the chance to contact the vet before the incident, good thing you did, huh?! Don't worry, they're tough!

Yes, they'll be clumsy for a while but they'll grow up quickly before you know it!

Awe!
We have the same cage, and my little guy has a broken wing as well. He is about 7weeks old, and not yet weaned sad.gif. I had to lower everything in his cage as well, but now that he has his cast off and is doing better I have moved his things higher. smile.gif

Nice talking to you, and welcome to the forum.

My quaker was very clumsy when i got him, just make sure to keep practicing the step-ups, and walk around the house with them. introduce them to holding on to your shoulder while you are sitting, the more experiances the better!

congrats on your choice of bird as well! good choice

Awwwwwwww they are sweet...
I would add a towel or a whole newspaper to the bottom of the cage (on top of the grate) just for extra padding if your little ones take a fall itr will ease to jolt..
Maybe take them to your bed room lay an old sheet on the bed and play with them where they can`t see the cage..
I am sure it won`t be long and they will be more steady on their little legs and enjoy playing ontop of their cage , its a beautiful cage too BTW...

hi to you all!! like the cage also!
dont worry about them running for their cage! my qp (also green) i got at 6weeks and he is now 11weeks! at 8weeks like yours he was quite shy,and remember they havent been there long! ive had oatis 5weeks and hes decided to come out of his shell and try talking and is to put it lightly a show off and a total loony haha! they r just in their baby stage and discovering life away from their flock! few weeks and you will have some fab stories for us!!
the cast (although he prob hates it) gives him a bit of charactor in his pics lol their beautiful!!
oh and when i first got oatis i had the perch the lowest it could go and padded cage with a towel and got him a cosy hut. i also placed the food and water bowls on the bottom but also put food and water in propa bowls for when he discovered them! took him about a week to figure out his cage! but he still has a towel just incase hehe

Thank for the advice! What a great idea about the towl of something soft on the bottom of the cage. I just never thought of that!

Also about taking them to the other rooms away from the cage.
