This morning we had day one of two of a new roof being put on. They laid the tar paper (it's not called that now) but that black paper on the roof and now there is an odor in the house. Anyone know if this could be toxic to my Bubba? Not sure what I would do anyway, no where to take him. I would think they couldn't use roofing material that would be harmful to animals. Does anyone know - I'm Googling but haven't found out anything yet. Thanks, I would die if I harmed my baby in some way. ohmy.gif

Hi hi
I am guessing you are having asphalt shingles for a roof. They do lay black paper down and sometimes use adhesives to hold it in place before the tiles are nailed down. It might be the adhesive you are smelling which probably isnt good for humans let alone animals to inhale. However if you open your windows and create proper ventilation it shouldnt be a problem because the smell will go away in a couple of days. If its a really strong smell I would advise moving your bird to an area where you least smell it and keep the windows open.
The best way to find out for sure and eliminate guess work is to just ask your roofing contractor what the smell is.
Good luck and hugs

Thanks - the black paper did have some kind of sticky stuff on it but they also nailed it down. It's over 90 degrees here with 100% humidity, my husband would die if I opened the windows, so I have all the fans going to circulate the air. Either I'm getting used to it or the smell is dying down. I will also ask the roofer about it. Never occurred to me that there will be any type of smell. Gosh - it's always something. wink.gif
