I want to make a birdie binkie for my Quaker, Kiwi and maybe even for my Parakeets Petey and Rocky. Anybody made one before? What I am really looking for is what size the strips of fleece should be? Do you just tie the fleece once or do you tie it into a knot? Any help would be great! Thanks smile.gif

after googling what it is (example), i have this to say. i got an embroidery hoop and some fleece remnants. i cut the fleece into strips of varying lengths and widths (more of necessity due to them being remnants). i just tied mine on with a single knot, strip by strip, keeping them very close together to make it fuller. i don't know if you are supposed to randomly alternate the placement of the knots or not, but i didn't, and it made for a flat surface inside the hoop.

i'll upload a pic and post it later if you want. for louie the quaker, i used a green that is very close to his color plus white, and for goofy the CAG i used red, green and white. his looks more like a christmas wreath lol. louie doesn't care for his too much, goofy likes to bang his around and chew on the fleece.

nice and cheap, compared to store bought. once you invest in the hoop you only need to replenish the fleece every so often. and very easy to do while mindlessly watching the tube. just repetitious and my fingers started to get tired about halfway thru.

A picture would be great thanks! I made a happy hut and Kiwi loves it, I'm thinking he will also like the binkie, or at least I'm hoping. I have the ring and I bought remnants of the fleece, the lady at Hancocks wanted to know what I was making. I told her, she wants me to bring it up when I am done.

You can use a macrame ring and you can get them at Michaels, JoAnnes Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics, Ben Franklin stores and who knows where else. Depending on how fuzzy you want it depends on how wide the strips will be and how long the strands are. I think Georgia on my mind made hers using 1 inch wide strips by 6 inches long and tied them to the ring. You'll need to really squish them together I would imagine, having never made one myself, that's what it looks like to me. Or another way you might tie the fleece on to the ring is to double the fabric and loop it over the ring and then running the free ends through the fold this would make a flat loop and you'd need to alternate them to get it fuzzy in the inside as well.

I made two of these this past weekend, I used embroidery hoops from Michaels, and Hannah Montana fleece lol (yes my daughter is a Hannah FREAK) anyway I cut the fleece about an inch and a half wide, and about 7 inches long, double knotted them to the hoop and voila

i have been collecting fleece (and my mom has for us too) for a long time. i really want to make one of those corner hammock things that i see. i'm sure louie would flip out. i'm not a very proficient sewer and wouldn't even have a clue how to attach rings to it to hang. i was thisclose to busting out the sewing machine today tho to give it a whirl.

still need to get a pic on here...

Yeah! I made one. Now I just have to wait and see if Kiwi likes it. Thanks for the help. Once I figure out how to get pictures on here I will post some pictures.

I just used plain ole fleece like the kind everyone was making into blankets last year!!

I do have a question though, mine isnt as full as the one that the link shows, I woner how I can get mine to look that full and bushy

Mine is not as full either, I'm not really sure how to make it fuller like the pictures either. I still like the price alot better than buying one on-line and paying for the shipping. Mine might have cost me $2.00 to make. Same with the happy huts I've been making, and I like mine alot more than the ones I could have bought at Petsmart or Petco.

I'm going to pm paula to check in on this topic- she makes tons of fleece toys for her birds and sets of accessories for sugargliders. She has posted pics before and does great work. Maybe she'll provide some tips/ ideas and pics for us.

I recently made 2 of the hoops with fleece strips- they look great but none of the fids are interested in them. Hopefully they'll catch on and take interest soon, but if not maybe I'll trade them out to someone for some other fid items wink.gif

This is a whole set but you can see the play ring and the 2 vines on the top.

Here are some more rings. They can be single, double, triple, etc... And the rings can be different sizes.

Here are 4 more of the vines.

And you can see that this vine has longer pieces. You can make them as short or as long as you want and the length of the vine is made any length also.

I make 3 different kinds of vines.

You can use any color(s)of fleece.

I use brass rings.

I knew I had seen these on here before and I just found where I saw them. It was under general pet bird discussion in DIY:Do it your self , the thread was > Lookit What We Made!, A fleece swing. I think I should've made my strips wider and that might have made it fuller. Oh well, Kiwi seems to like it, I see him playing with it as I type smile.gif

what do you mean you use brass rings on which item? I cant figure out how you make the vine unless you maybe use the bird safe white plastic chain and tie fleece to that?!?! Also how do YOU get yours so darn gorgeous? Mine dont look at all as pretty as yours do!
Paula0442
The wreaths are the ones with the brass, actually metal, rings. You just tie fleece around it.

The vines I make by sewing or tying onto the white plastic chain or using shower curtain hangers.

Mine might be gorgeous because I've made hundreds of them!!! LOL
