Blu Tiki
Hello Everyone! I am a new Quaker mom and very excitied to have a new baby in the house. Tiki is a now 4 month old Blue Quaker. I bought him from a local breeder and visit him very often for a month before bring him home.

I grew up with a few birds in the home. My dad had 8 Peach face lovebirds and my mom had two cocketils. One of my dads lovebirds adopted me and we were pretty much unsepratable. She would even get mad at me if I stayed the night at frieds homes cause I was not there to be with her. I grew very found and attached to her. When my dad died my mom sold off all the birds but would not let me buy Baby the bird that I had such a bond with. Sense then I have bugged my husband for 6 yrs now to let me have a bird. He finally gave in so the hunt for a bird was on. I knew I wanted a talking bird but I didn't want something as big as a macaw and I knew I didn't want anything as small as a finch(I know they can't talk). So from there I knew I wanted something with personality and would be very loving. I also looked for a bird that would be open to others playing with him. I was looking into sun conures and other conures when I found a couple different adds in the local news paper for Quaker Parrots. I asked my husband and even called my mom and asked if they had ever heard of this bird. Nether had. So I googled them. I read forums and e books for a week about these birds and at the end knew that it was exactly what I wanted. Now the challenge was to find a breeder who had handfed sense birth and who would let me visit for awhile before bring them home. I found that a lot in my area was hand feeding but wanted me to just buy the bird and take it home not let me visit. Finally I found Judy who lived 100 miles away who was willing to. So for a month I went to visit Tiki for 2/3 hours and let him get use to me as I did him.

Now I have him home and have had him for a month. When I got him he was 11 weeks old and already very loving and a cuddle bug. So far he has been everything I could want or need out of a new baby but he doesn't talk. The only thing we have gotten him to say is Hello and then he also does a evil laugh I taught him. But thats it. I put a lot of energy into what I am trying o teach him but still nothing. He is a out of the cage bird. His cage opens on the top and makes a sorta play top area which he has lots of toy and other fun stuff we also have special perches that are attatched to the outside of the cage for play time. When I wake up in the morning I open up the cage and say good morning and we exchange kisses. He stays out the rest of hte day til bed time. If I go anywhere but Wal Mart he goes with me. He gets lots of love and attention and plenty of socialization so what am I missing. How come my wonderful baby isnt talking yet? Most things I have read is that they start talking as soon as 12 weeks and once they say there first word they have broke through the ice and start talking more. He said hello his first time 2 weeks ago and that has been it. Please help.

Welcome! sounds like you two have a great bond already. as for the talking-give him some time. wink.gif I'm sure he'll surprise you some day and just start mumbling all kinds of things under is breath (mine is a closet talker too) then then catch you off guard and start talking..(carefull what you wish for he may not ever stop! lol)

My 11 week old qp oatis said hello, f*off (i really need to watch my mouth!!) and "what" and laughed! but now he just says "what" when hes on time out and hasnt repeated the others! he laughs when we laugh or a visitor laughs but he does practice speach! i think they do it when they arent thinking about it and actually shock themselves! i suspect they will continue the talking but when they feel confident enough they get the word right!their very clever birds but can also be very shy! i think your gonna have a right talker! i got oatis talking quite early by rewarding him with treats! and over praising him, literally going mad with praise actually haha!! patience is the key!!

Yes I have read many places that some never talk and I can see what you mean by shy. He is not afraid to say hello unless we are around new people then he just sits on my shoulder and checks them out. And he does sit on top of his cage and tries I think. The sounds he makes I know are not his normal squeaks and chirps and sounds to me like the noises he makes when he talked so I assume he is working his vocal cords but sometimes I get frustrated with myself cause I try so hard and all I get is hello. Maybe all in due time. And speaking of talking, does anyone elses qp growl?? Or shake thier head no when they dont want something? These are things he's been doing sense I got him so I was wondering if its a qp thing or a Tiki thing.
