I am wondering if it is okay for quakers to nibble on bones. We had pork chops tonight and I always share some of the potatoes and veggies with Shakespeare, but didn't know if he could have bones.

I wouldn't think any bones would be okay. Your bird could swallow a sharp piece. Since they are not good for cats and dogs, I would not think they would be okay for birds either. Maybe very cooked, soft bones would be okay. I am sure someone has a definite answer.

All of mine get chicken bones. The cooked leg bones and the bigger wing bones, they love to eat the marrow. You do have to SUPERVISE.
I do not give any other bones.

RAW bones do not splinter. Dogs and cats can and do eat raw bones, some on a completelt raw diet. I would imagine the same thing would apply to birds. They would not splinter for them either.

I occasionally give cooked chicken bones. Leg or thigh where they can eat the end off of it and get into the marrow. even leave the cartilage and maybe a bit of chicken on there too. But never, never raw. Possibility of bacteria or even salmonaila.

Raw bones are a big no no. Think salmonella among other things. Bone marrow is actually good for birds however I should add that one of our forum members ie Majj had problems with her quaker Buddy and a bone fragment. I cant find the exact link to it but i am sure Maj will be along to talk about it.

Yep , I always gave my birds once a week the big bone from the wing (cooked) they would break it open and get the marrow its good for them and it was a once a week treat ..
This was done on the advice from my vet ..I have done it for 8years NO PROBLEMS...

BUT

A few months ago Buddy started to vomit 3 or 4 times a day and was making strange neck movements..He was well in all other aspec`s..on a vet exam it was first found that he had a very high yeast infection , the vet told me yeast infections are usually brought on by something else happening with-in the bird but first things first treat the yeast infection and see how things go so 10 days on a anti fungal twice a day and the vomiting ceased so we re-tested yeast infection gone we decided to leave things and do no further invasive tests BUT after 3 weeks the vomiting started AGAIN ..back another yeast test showed that the yeast had increased a little so we decided first to do the least invasive Xray ...it showed a bit of bone in the gut which was of course the best possible out come as being organic material the vet thought it would dissolve and it had probably been bigger causing Buddy discomfort hence the vomiting and neck movements and it seems that a couple more weeks on aniti fungal and withing the next month all vomiting just ceased..

I would say that the bone has been slowly dissolving and it had been there at least 2 months before Buddy stoped the vomiting ...So that little incident has scared me of giving the boys bones BUT I may weaken and give them their treat again as they loved it and I feel it was a freak accident by Buddy maybe being a bit of a pig but the marrow is good for them, and like I said I have never had a problem before they crack open the bone and eat the marrow and eating or swallowing the bit of bone was most likely just an accident...

As for picking the meat from big bones (Pork/Lamb) etc I see no harm as long as you have not chewed the bone and it has your saliva (bacteria from your mouth is very dangerous for your fid/s)a little cooked meat is a good source of Protein ...

Thanks for all the imput.I think I will try one here and there and see if Shakespeare likes them.
I'm glad Buddy was okay Majj.
