This has prolly been discussed recently but I didnt see it?

I have a sun conure and she flys like a champ, dodges swoops down and around and comes back. But my QP
cant really fly. (he was clipped a few times) His feathers are all grown in now. What I do is let him go and he flys down to the bed in front of me, he is flying but frantically flapping and he glides down. Im wondering is he
will eventually figure iout what to do ie get better at it?

Does anyone know or have experience doing this? Thank you for any help guys.

You know what I'd do Janet is while you have him out and sitting on your hand, I'd play a little game with him and make it seem really fun by being excited about it when he flaps his wings, I'd hold him on my finger and then drop my hand so that he has to flutter his wings to keep his balance. He'll be strengthening his wing muscles as you do that and when he gets strong enough and feels that he can get lift when he does it he may just start attempting to fly more. But remember what happened not to long ago when he managed to get away.

Good luck.

Thanks Connie yea Ive been doing that but will have to continue to. Im really hoping he will be able to actually eventually learn to fly...he is a good bit clueless, atleast he knows to flap and not stop lol. That was pretty upsetting when he got away from my husband last year and its really something to be vigilant about them getting away. Unfortunately when that happened husband had actually walked outside to the car with him thinking he could not fly with those clipped wings! A hard lesson learned. dry.gif

Was he allowed to fledge (learn to fly) when he was wheaned ..?? They say its best to let your fid learn to fly before clipping ..I must say Buddy is like a little helecopter and Sunny is like a Jet flyer as you discribed in and out swooping diving , Buddy flys well but not as fast and he kind of hovers before he lands comes in softly ..Maybe its just differnt types of fids...

Buddy landing (wasn`t quick enough with the camera)

Hi Majj! Sorry I didnt see your reply! No Cheekys was never allowed to fledge to my knowledge. BUT my husband took him out to the car last year (clipped wings too) and he flew off (we got him back). We have him fly to us over the bed everyday now and he seems ok getting used to it. But he does flap alot like a bird who doesnt know really how to fly. Cherub our sun now she flys! But Im hoping he will learn? What do you think Majj?

Those are such beautiful pics you get of your birds Majj!

I am sure he will get more confident in time but I doubt he will be a jet plane like the sun conures , just till he is sure of where he is going etc contain him to one room shut blinds or draw curtains so he stays clear from windows etc..
Good luck ..yes I got a few lucky shots ..Digital cameras ar great with 30 or more shots I got a couple of beauties... smile.gif

petrie was clipped before (not sure about before or after he learned to fly) and when I got him he was clipped as well...(he is 10, i got him last year) I really wanted him to be able to fly on his own, but even after his wings were clipped he was still really dependent on me. He would fly to a few places he knew was safe to land, but wouldn't venture out much. I stopped letting him rely on me by encouraging him to "come here!" and "come on!" and eventually he started flying better and better! (even started saying "come on!") he now can cut corners and everything, just like a pro!! lol, he still won't land on my arm though dry.gif not that i have a ton of experience, but i definitely think its like anything with these little guys, practice makes perfect!! best of luck*

also the wing strengthening tip is a very good one... i will remember that if i happen to get a baby bird after petrie!! biggrin.gif
