I bought my 2nd quaker today, this time a blue! was told 11weeks old at first but the guy then said the hatch date is 30th may and the hatch cert backs this up! but why lie? i have a feeling this bird has just been pulled from parents and not hand reared as stated! It seems that he/she is very timid of humans and just doesnt seem anything like oatis did when he first came to my house! also the blue (skye) doesnt know step up command, infact doesnt seem to know much apart from how to fly! it can fly real well!!
its also really pale blue,i expected it to be quite bright like i see on pictures but he isnt bright at all?
am i just being paranoid cos he isnt like my first one was? (i understand their all different!) or have i reason to think my bird isnt how it should be???

Someone with more experience will be along to give you more detailed advice, but I would take Skye to the Vet just to make sure everything checks out, and to get some blood work done. They can tell the age by doing that, so if the blood work has a third, different age you know something's fishy.

Hope everything works out biggrin.gif, and I love the name!
truman
It does sound like something is odd. Truman was supposed to be hand raised but didn't know how to step up when we got him at the pet shop...he wasn't at all timid of humans tho' and was quite bold once he got settled in so I guess they didn't teach him 'step up' for whatever reason. With yours, it could be the adjustment period and maybe he will get more friendly when he settles in, but that age thing sounds strange.

Thanks smile.gif
Oatis is not at all happy about him being here but is calming down! he at one point was trying to fly round room to attack the poor little guy but now hes just keeping his distance! skye is being very brave if i am honest but thats probably immaturaty than bravery!
He is a lot better after a few hours here and is perching very well! the guy said he was weaning him but i gave him some kaytee formula before and had to show him how to do it,like it was his first time!!!
and he is trying to eat seed, successfully most of the time so i dont know what to think.he isnt a great deal smaller than Oatis so maybe he is older than i think, then the hatch cert doesnt make sense! he does act like a 7/8 week old which is what the ring and hatch cert say but he seems big? i dont know, maybe i just expected the same as oatis! theres only 3weeks between them but i am still petrified one could get a serious injury!
they were okish before beak to beak but then oatis went for him when he turned his back on him? he isnt biting half as hard as he was earlier though, more like testy pecks? hope he settles soon!!

You need to remember, not everyone handles their babies the same way. It sounds like your bird may be a pallid blue which is a lighter more gray blue than a normal blue.

As I was saying not every breeder will take the time to handle and play with each bird and teach them to step up. Some will hand feed them and handle them just long enough to get the job done and then put them back in the brooder, so that yes they can say it was hand fed which isn't a lie but it isn't tame.

Its also been my experience that while not all blues are skittish and flighty, many of them are. In fact the pallid bird I have out in my aviary was just exactly that. Also if I remember correctly Dave's DMMoultons bird Pippin was also very very flighty for quite some time when he first brought him home. So just keep working with him, be patient and hopefully s/he'll come around.

You might also consider getting his wings trimmed at least till his first molt so that he's more dependant on you and you have a little more control over him. Then you can decide if you want him to have full flight once you've got him trained to step up every time.

Also, I'd also like to point out that no two birds are alike, just like us we are all different even birds from the same clutch can be as different as as night and day just like you and your siblings can be.

Thanks for some great advice! smile.gif
i was really against clipping but even my green is flighty and refusing to stay on hands etc! only heads so it could help to clip him too.
Also may help whilst they arent getting on! 2 birds flying round the room isnt easy lol also skye just isnt safe flighted! he is going to end up injured if he isnt clipped as hes very very clumsy at the moment.
my green prefers my partner but the blue seems to like to sit on my shoulder and it does respond when i talk to him etc. but skye does seem to try hiding in my hair and under my clothes etc! maybe as hes new here?
i shall clip them both tomorrow and let every body know how things go smile.gif thanks again!

don't try clipping yourself if you are not experienced in it. Even if you do it, it is atleast a 2 person job.
kirsty
i know smile.gif i used to clip my mams greys (she was a breeder) and also used to clip my own grey and cockatiel smile.gif

ok...my quakers are associating with each other. both making purry type noises and dont seem violent as such but oatis does keep, what looks like trying to preen skye's head and neck? although sometimes gets too close to the eye, this is very, very supervised of course! Both keep trying to remove skyes ring on his leg which makes me think it may be worthwhile removing it??? before one of them removes a toe or foot!!
I am unsure if this is them getting on or if this is oatis trying to bully skye? skye fluffs up but oatis doesnt? oatis also makes a point of stopping now and again and flying to my partners head(hes very attached to my partner)
they also keep sort of beaking each others beak, almost like kissing? and i am sure oatis tried to regurgitate!! skye is still weaning and was begging for food once beak to beak then oatis did the regurgitating type action that my grey used to do although nothing came up! he then tried with one foot to get onto skye and was preening (i think) at the same time?
any suggestions would really help as quaker behaviour is new to me!!
