Hi, Ive been lurking for a while and wanted to pop in and say hello. Ive learned a great deal about Quakers from reading this (and other) forums. Thank you all for the information and sharing your stories. My family currently consists of 1 husband, 2 teenage boys, 2 parakeets, 1 cockatiel, 6 fish, 4 cats, and 1 chihuahua. Its quite a little zoo but we all seem to co exist. The keets are not especially tame but they are cared for and seem happy with each other. The tiel is quite tame and loves to be held and played with. The cats are in mid-life and a bit mellow, but I still keep a careful eye on them with the birds. The dog is a total doofus, sweet natured, but I also know she could easily kill a bird just wanting to play with it. It is my rule that if a bird is out it must be in direct sight of whoever is watching it. I have been dreaming of getting a QP now for about 2 months. I got one of those HQ flight cages and am slowly furnishing it for the new arrival. Problem is no one around here seems to have one. My choices are limited to driving 6 hours for one ready now , or waiting for eggs to hatch and babies to be weaned a half hour drive away, or a pet store bird with aggression issues at a high price a 2 hour drive away. Lol I would fall in love with the one thing I cant find. dry.gif Ah well, I know Ill get one in time, and when I do there will be pictures. laugh.gif

Thanks for the warm welcome all. I live in east central Iowa. As for a rehomed QP, I am not aware of any in my area, and I do not have experience with problem birds. Im not saying I wouldnt consider it, but Im pretty much an amateur.

Hi, I spent some time looking at the parrot rescue sites but most do not allow rehoming with someone with cats. Although I would not let anything happen to my birds I know some people are not as careful or do not fully understand cat nature so I do understand that rule. This seems to be turning in to a long term quest, which is fine as it gives me plenty of time to prepare.

HELLO EVERYONE,
MY NAME IS SASSY33 AND I AM THE MOM OF A VERY LARGE BUNCH. HERE WE HAVE 3 DOGS,15 GOLDFISH, 3 TIELS, 1 RINGNECK PARAKEET AND BEST OF ALL OUR NEW LITTLE QUAKER BUNDLE.
WE JUST BROUGHT HIM HOME THURSDAY EVENING, HE IS 11 WEEKS OLD NOW. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING HIM SINCE HE WAS 3 WEEKS. WE WENT TO THE PET SHOP EVERY OTHER DAY TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH HIM. THE PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE SAID HE WAS THE TAMES ONE OUT OF ALL FOUR OF THEM. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT KNOWN IF MY QUAKER IS MALE OR FEMALE. TO ME IT DOES NOT MATTER, I'LL LOVE HIM EITHER WAY.
HE DOSEN'T SAY MUCH OR MAKE ANY NOISE. I DO WATCH HIM TO MAKE SURE HE EATS AND DRINKS WATER. HE KNOWS HIS NAME ALREADY AND IF HE FEELS LIKE IT, HE'LL GIVE KISSES. NOT OFTEN.WE HAD HAD A QUAKER BEFORE TOBY, HIS NAME WAS PORKY AND WE GOT HIM FREE OUT OF THE PAPER. WE HAD HIM FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AND HE PASSED AWAY THIS PASS FEBRUARY.THAT LITTLE BIRD LEFT A BIG HOLE IN MY HEART WHEN HE LEFT ME. HE WAS THE FIRST ONE I SAID HELLO TO IN THE MORNING AND WHEN I CAME HOME FROM WORK, HE EVEN HELPED ME CLEAN THE HOUSE ON THE WEEKENDS.SUNDAYS I BELIEVE WAS THE HARDEST CAUSE WE CHILLED ALL DAY ON THE LOVESEAT JUST HIM AND ME WATCHING TV,GIVING KISSES AND GROOMING EACH OTHER.
EVEN THOUGH THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM AND I CAN'T REPLACE HIM FOR ANYTHING, TOBY HAS IN HIS 4 DAYS HERE AND HIS OWN SPECIAL WAY HELPED.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS. AND FOR LETTING ME SPILL MY GUTS OUT. wub.gif wub.gif

Welcome to the forum (both of you) biggrin.gif

ElfKat, if you have someone with Quakers sitting on eggs right now, then I'd wait it out. Being only a 30 min. drive away is a huge advantage as you can visit the babies as they are growing up. If you can hang on for 3 months or so, then that's the option I'd go with.

Hi and welcome! I agree with Carrie Anne, if you wait for the ones on eggs you will be able to visit it as its growing and it will be used to you before you even bring it home. I know how hard it is to wait but I just know it would be worth it.
