Sebastion and Shelby have never learned to fly as babies (both are now 4) Its sounds pretty crazy to say that a bird doesn't know how to fly..but the people that raised them from hatchlings just did not have the room to allow them to properly fledge.
So we have not clipped wings on either bird for close to a yr now and each have all of their flight feathers in (they are just beautiful fully feathered wub.gif ) Shelby has showed NO interest in flying, Sebastion however is slowly learning that perhaps those wings are designed for a purpose. Its been a slow and gradual interest such as lifting a foot off my arm or the stand as he flaps his wings and he seem to be figuring it out.
Well last night he finally gave it a shot..flew from the treestand and made it to me in the family room.As he landed on the couch he seemed a bit confused and kept spinning in circles and saying "Oh, No!" over and over.I called his name and he walked over to me laid his head on my lap and said "whats that..WHATS THAT MOMMA!" He was trembling!Poor guy didn't know what happened sad.gif
Now we are debating letting him learn to fly...or just keeping things as they are and clip his wings again. It just seemed to scare and confuse him !

Wow thats awesome! I too have let my QP grow his wings out and he has no indication how to fly. But I keep working with him and hopefully one day he will be an avid flyer the house. Our sun coniure wow she really swoops turns in mid air etc. Shes like an outside bird in the house. I think eventually your big guy will get used to his wings and not be so scared. I know my QP is a bit concerned but I am going to keep up with it. Keep us posted!

Awwwwwwwww, I remember the first time my Alexandrine flew she was about 9 years old and it to freaked her out, she was panting almost like a dog would, and her lil sides were heaving! I felt bad for her and she hasnt done it since then!
Quincy's Slave
Awww poor guy. I'm sure with a few more tries he'll gain confidence and wing strength. I can only imagine how awesome he'd look flying!
Sandi Kiwis Mom
I remember the first time Kiwi flew and it scared the bejesus out of me!!!! He hit a window and thankfully there was a blind. Kiwi is over 8 yrs old now and he does not care to fly as long as he has acess to everything he loves. I don't clip his wings anymore and they are absolutely gorgeous all grown out. I guess you just have to "test the waters" As far as Gidget, my little Green Cheek Conure, well she needs her wings clipped because she will NOT stay on her cage or her jolly ball. If she decides she needs to get down, she just flies. That is why she is called a "little chit" LOL

I bet he is beautiful with his wings spread. Someday i hope the right opportunity comes along for me to have one of the big guys.

Oh he'll get better and better at it! I wouldn't worry about that smile.gif Hehehe, I guess he just didn't know how awesome he was!
Casey's Mom
Awww, poor Sebastian! It must be a weird feeling to fly for the first time! blink.gif I'm sure he'll improve with
some practise! smile.gif

My friend has a B&G who has no idea how to fly, she flew once by accident and it completely freaked her out and she's never done it again! biggrin.gif wub.gif

I can only imagine seeing a Green Wing Macaw flying around. Does he knock anything over? biggrin.gif

Has he done any more flying since his first episode?

So far he hasn't flown enough for knocking things over..for now we still battle keeping everytninh from the pwer of the beak! He tries to eat/shred/destroy EVERYTHING he can get his beak on dry.gif
He has gone from the cage to the kitchen table..it didn't seem to scare him the second time, but perhaps because he wound up on the kitchen table...along with that nights dinner rolleyes.gif he was a happy fid with a beak full of corn-on-the-cob!
