Hello my name is Violet. I just purchased my first bird Mumble a quaker parrot. We also have many other birds in the house that are my mothers. We have several parakeets. We have 1 normal peach faced lovebird his name is color and his mate missy a lutino peach faced lovebird. We have two pied peach faced lovebirds they are unnamed. The we also have 3 baby peach faced lovebirds there was five, one dies at about 4 days old, the other my brother now has. The two about 3 months old and the one other about 4 weeks they are also unnamed. We also have a normal masked lovebird his name is shytown and his mate who is unnamed. They have 4 babys and the 5th my brother has they are about 3 months and also unnamed. The last of the lovebirds is to fishers one is a yellow dilute and the other we think might be a masked or a combination of a masked and a fischers. They are also unnamed. We also have one cockatial she is unamed her mate Packer just died after trying to lay 2 batches of eggs. We just bought her a new mate who we will be bring home on the 1st. Anyone with anyone helpful information on quakers talk to me. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum. Sounds like you have lots of birds. Quakers are so very different. They are like having a child, that stays 2 years old for a long time. I have had my quaker Mr. Kiwi for over 8 yrs and I absolutely love him to death. Please quarantine your New quaker from the rest of your birds for 30 days at least. I bought a green cheek conure and even tho the breeder said that she was by herself, I still quarantined my gcc from my qp, just to make sure that all was well.

I am wondering......why do so many of the birds not have a name? I think names are important.

Hi my name is Grace. I am planning on getting a Quaker Parrot in the next few weeks. Right now I only have a Cockatiel named Pretty Boy. Can I keep the Quaker in the same room as the Cockatiel or should they be in separate rooms. I love birds and can't wait to get one. I lost my dog last year & I need another pet to love. I am interested in one that talks and plan on working with him/her a lot. Do you have any suggestions for me re: size of cage, food, etc. I would appreciate any feedback from you. Thanks!!!

Hiya Grace.

I am sure you will LOVE being enslaved by a little green chicken.

You can keep your Q and your tiel in the same room (after quarantine). You may get lucky and they will even play together a little. You will have to referee tween them as you introduce them ... see how it goes. But you may have to ensure that they have totally separate play areas. All my birds (I have 8) are out of their cages when I am home and they pretty much leave each other alone. The tiels hang together, the budgies hang together, my sun and Quaker are best buds, and my IRN just kinda oversees them all! biggrin.gif You will want to cage the tiel and Q separately. Most ppl will tell you that they can't live together. I have a tiel that lives with one of my budgies, and one tiel lives with my Q, but they don't really interact, it is just more or less a place to perch their butts at nite dry.gif

Minimum cage size for a Quaker is usually 18 x 18, but the bigger you can afford the better!! Bar spacing usually no bigger than 5/8 inch apart, you don't want them able to get their ornery little heads thru the bars and get stuck and hurt themselves smile.gif

Some Quakers like a happy hut (sleepy hut) for nite time or security, some don't do well. Strictly a bird preference I think. My Isis (Quaker) doesn't have a hut of his own, but occasionally when he spends the nite with Precious (sun) he will sleep in the hut with him ... it's funny seeing tails coming out both ends of the hut laugh.gif

You will want to make sure you get your quaker on a pelleted diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables as well. There is a thread pinned at the top of the Diet section that gives a listing of the good and bad foods for Quakers. You can get a lot of FREE samples from these companies .... just give them a call ...

Hagen (Tropican pellets and Gourmet mix)

Harrisons (pellets)

Roudybush Feed (pellets)

That way, you can find a pellet your fid (feathered kid) likes. Some like fruit flavored, some don't, some like colors, some don't ... again, bird preference.

Whatever time you are going to devote to your green feathered friend, think about whether you will be able to devote that much time to him for the NEXT 30 YEARS!! In other words, dont' spend more time with him than you will be able to do for a long long time in the future. If you spend the next 8 weeks with your fid on you 24/7, he will expect it forever and will let you KNOW it if you suddenly try to NOT spend ALL your time with him (as in work, school, life, other people, other pets, children, etc.) You will not want a screamer or a plucker to suddenly appear in place of your loving baby dry.gif

My fids are out of their cages when I am home, and I spend some one-on-one time with each of them, whether it's just talking to them, holding/cuddling them for a little while, playing with them, or letting them climb on me when i'm watching tv or online, but they also have toys to play with on top of the cages, in the cages, on the playstand, and they have each other when they are out. When they are in their cages during the day or if I am in and out of the house, they are fairly content to chatter back and forth and play with their toys. They chatter all the time, but I am lucky I don't have a screamer.

I hope this information has helped you without becoming a novel! blush.gif There is so much to learn about the quaker parrot, but one thing you will learn VERY quickly is how much love is packed in that little green ball of feathers! They capture your heart so quick!!

Any questions you have, don't hesitate to ask. We are very happy to share our knowledge and experience with the quaker parrot. Nothing is too dumb or stupid to ask, even if it's been asked a hundred time before ... if YOU don't know, how can you learn if you don't ask?

Welcome to the forum. We look forward to stories about your new slave master when you get him. Oh, and by the way ... WE LOVE PICTURES!!!
