Hi, I was thinking about taking my bird on a camping trip this summer with our family. Has anyone tried it? Are there any things to watch out for or prepare for?
Thank you-

You would definitely have to watch for heat exhaustion, you would not be able to leave it alone in a tent or trailer because they get so hot. You'd have to also watch for predators such as hawks, crows, raccoons etc. Mosquitos could be a problem as well

I agree with Catherine. Unless you go camping like we do...............in a Motor Home

If you camp where there is an electical hook up then you might be able to run a fan to circulate the air in a tent.. Or place the cage in one of the tents that are screened all the way around during the day. That will give him shade and protection. You can tell if he is getting hot. Take a bottle to mist him with. If you can stand it he prob can too. Just be careful. Clip his wings and/or have a harness on him if out. Id sure keep him in a cage prob at all times. Its bad enough for one to get loose in your neighborhood so that you can continue the search. But To lose him in the woods and you had to leave to go home,,,devastating.

These are all great ideas. We do use a harness, and his wings are clipped. I worrie about heat, and bugs! On the other hand, if I can deal with it and he is with me at all times, just maybe it will work. I guess I will have to be willing to have a velcro bird the whole camping trip. HHHHHHMMM, maybe I had better rethink this one. I do the cooking also, so I wouldnt want the smoke to get anywhere near him.
Boy, I really wanted him to come along, now I am thinking its best he stay home with a sitter.
So I guess no one here has taken their bird tent camping before???
Thanks-

I've heard of a few people who have taken their birds tent camping before, but they've also taken the proper precautions. You could always do a 'test' camping trip and go somewhere local, for one night, and test it out. Just be prepared to leave at a moments notice if you have to.

We took our QP on a few camping trips

He slept on his perch in our tent, we also brought a travel cage for daytime outside the tent..and we have one of the screen tents and just made that his spot w/ his playstand
Never noticed any problems with bugs bothering him although the heat was an issue and I just had a spray bottle to mist him down when it got too hot and he also had a pan of water in his screen tent so he could hop in when he wanted (which at one point he just sorta hung out in the pan of water lol) and that worked fine for us but dodger LOVES his baths. I might not do it if your birds is afraid or dislikes baths because he will need cooled off.
We would do again for sure.. the bird had a great time calling to the other birds and we just enjoyed having him along. He never was a "velcro" bird the entire trip and cooking was not an issue exceot for him yelling "WANT SOME" from his screened in playstand LOL
