that have a hand cut diamond in them? I know they don't cut them by hand now, they use a laser. So I was wondering when they stop cutting the diamonds by hand and went with a laser???

Does anyone have one in you set that was cut by hand? And does anyone know when they stopped cutting them by hand? I know I could look it up but I'm being lazy and I thought maybe someone on here might know right off the top of thier head!

So I would think if you had one that was cut by hand it would be worth alto more then the ones being cut by a laser now these days. Because they would be consider antiques right? Because they use laser only now to cut the diamond instead of by hand!

I have my grandmother's engagement ring which has a large hand cut diamond and is from 1940. I haven't had it officially appraised, but a jeweler I know gave me a rough estimate. It's worth a small fortune wink.gif

A quick google search shows that they still do cut diamonds by hand and they are, in fact, worth more (depending on various factors, of course).

I have a few. My mother had 2 sets of wedding rings and she married in 1934. I have the rings. I also have a ring with a solitaire diamond that her father gave her when she was 13 (that would have been 1927) and she gave it to me when I was 13. They are not very big, but I don't keep them here. I keep them locked in a safe deposit box simply because I do not wear them.

See I knew I would find someone that would know!! Thank you both.

The reason why Is because a few months ago we were in the paw shop. We like to go look in there and see if we can find anything cool! Well I was looking at the wedding rings and I seen this wedding ring set, it caught my eye like no other ring has ever before. I had her pulled it out of the cabinet and I was shaking because it was so beautiful and I wanted it so bad! But I knew we did not have enough money to put it in lay way. So Ray and I both just looked and stared out it. I prayed for 2 weeks for that ring to still be there on the 1st of the month and it was!! ohmy.gif And let me tell you I was the happiest girl that day! laugh.gif laugh.gif

And then their Jeweler said it is from the 1900 hundreds and it was cut by hand. Ray knows alto about diamonds so he looked at it every direction and he did not see one flaw in it. He look Under those things you look through at diamonds! He even took it outside and still did not see a flaw!

So we left and guess what I talked him into. It took Little of talking, but it's in lay way and it's going to be mine when he gets his SSN. We are making small payments on it now. I knew he was going to put it in lay way anyway because why else was he going there that day he was trying to play hard and sneaky! biggrin.gif

They said it's been in lay way twice before and both time the people was not able to get it out.
I'm so happy it's over 3/4 cart not a whole cart but almost.

I just hope it all works out and it's on my finger in a few months. I think about the ring alto. (SILLY blink.gif GIRL) He told me right before we got married he promise he would get me a diamond someday and now his keeping his promise. I can't wait to show all of you the ring!

actually most diamonds are still hand cut. They are one of the few stones that still are. Older diamonds were cut differently than they are today. supposedly the cuts today show more of the brilliance of the stones but there is just something about antique diamonds that the modern ones can't match.

That's Interesting! It's stunning and it looks like clear crystal water. I have never seen a diamond like the one I have in lay way. It shin's and sparkle different. It's very different and the style is not like anything I have ever seen!

Thank you!

I've worked at a jewelry store for four years now and have picked up a lot about diamonds. They are still hand cut, and Antwerp, Belgium is the diamond CUTTING capital of the world, not mining, cutting. Their diamonds are cut by third generation diamond cutters. The cutter have to apprentice for ten YEARS before they're even able to touch a 1ct or above.
And the old way of cutting diamonds didn't have as many facets, and they clipped the very tip of the diamond off, so when you look down into the stone you can kind of see an eye at the very center. Just a small circle. You can't see that in the newer diamonds. And of course ANY diamond that is flawless is very valuable, but it would have to be certified by someone to be sure that it is actually flawless. The best American institute to get a stone certified by is GIA, Gemological Institute of America. That covers two of the four C's of diamonds, cut and clarity. Two more important issues are the color and carat. Carat is the one most people are familiar with, anything over a carat is more rare, and of course the higher you go the rarer they are and more expensive they are. Color is just that, color. You can tell a big difference in a clean white diamond and one that has a brownish or yellowish tint to it.
In any case, if a diamond makes you happy or reminds you of something, such as the love you share with your husband, then that's all that matters once it's on your finger. Very doubtful that many people are going to be walking around with a jeweler's loupe in their pocket waiting to check for imperfections in your stone. So enjoy your ring!!!
I hope this wasn't too much information.

Congrats, its so much fun! I am glad to found the right one for you, I know it seems silly- but it can be a real challenge.

I am right now going around looking, and looking, and looking! Like wedding dresses, "they all look the same" and it is hard to find something that feels "you" and significant. We are not in any hurry, but seeing as we are on this topic, I want to bring this up for any other couples out there!

I really favour antique rings as well, just it feels nice to know that one has something with charactor (and hopefully good history) and that we are not adding to unneccessary distruction of the earth for mining or pain, suffering, slavery and war.

I am aware of the Kimberley process, but, I must say- I don't entirely trust it. That, and just tearing apart the earth for metals/stones does bother me. Most of us have inherited pieces we don't wear and won't ever- so what I am opting to do is just keep a few originals that have stories I love to pass on, and reuse the other things.

So, with that in mind, here are a few favourite sites:

www.greencarat.com

www.krikawa.com

www.moissaniteco.com

Personally, I love the idea of his/her matching set. He loves the mokume, I like the idea of remanufactured metal and we both love the idea of moissanite. Tee Hee- for way less money, we can have totally "us" rings and HUGE honking sparklies! Apparently, many jewelers even think they are diamond, and they wear better. Benefit to me, my birds are always chewing on my rings.

hahaha!

Enjoy!
