I HAVE A STORY. A FRIEND OF MINE HAD A TIEL(I KNOW QUAKER FORUM) BUT SHE WAS THE ONE THAT STARTED ME ON GETTING BIRDS.ANYWAY SHE BOUGHT HER BIRDS A HEATED PERCH PER THE VET, HE SAID IT WOULD KEEP THEM WARM.I HAD TOLD HER THAT DALLASS' FEET WHERE COLD ALL THE TIME.THAT'S WHEN SHE TOLD ME WHERE TO GET THE HEATED PERCH(DRS.FOSTER AND SMITH'S). THE PERCH IS NOT IN THE BOOK DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. ANYWAY I BOUGHT 2- 1 FOR DALLAS AND GUSSIEGIRL'S CAGE ,1- FOR STORM'S.THEY LOVE IT!!!!! SO, NOW I HAVE A QUESTION.
DOES ANYONE THINK IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR TOBY TO HAVE ONE?
SAM DOESN'T HAVE ONE AND PORKY(GRHS) DIDN'T EITHER.MY MOTHER-IN-LAW HAD A QUAKER FOR 28 SOME ODD YEARS AND HE DIDN'T LIKE TOYS AND HE DIDN'T HAVE A HEATED PERCH EITHER. BUT I NOTICE THAT TOBY STICKS HIS FOOT UP UNDER. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WAS A SIGN THAT THEY ARE COLD. AM I WRONG? mellow.gif mellow.gif

When they sleep with one foot tucked under, it's a sign they're relaxed and well. If they are sleeping a lot and do not lift one foot, it could be a sign that they are not feeling well.

I haven't seen the heated perch. What are they made of?

Like QPdad said it's completely normal and healthy for them to perch on one foot. smile.gif

I really don't know about the heated perches, I think a few people use them and haven't had any problems but personally I wouldn't use them with Casey... I do know that they have been known to cause burns on some birds feet. wink.gif

Others may have some different opinions. smile.gif

I don't have them either, probably won't unless I notice a major problem with the birds. My feeling is, unless the bird has a medical problem and its related to circulatory problems I don't see the need. I've seen them in a couple of stores but I myself would be concerned about the birds chewing on the electrical cord even though I know its covered with a spring type covering and that the wires are totally outside the cage and not exposed in side. But I'm not a fan of electrical things around animals especially ones that are known chewers.

As others have said, when a bird perches and pulls one foot up into his feathers that definitely is a sign of contentment and a healthy bird, nothing to worry about. I also believe its a way for them to just relax their foot because the constant gripping they do I would think that they could get fatigued once in a while.

Its my belief that birds have bare legs and feet for a reason, and that is to help regulate overall body temp. If you play with your bird a lot you've probably noticed that when they are very active their feet warm up rather quickly, So unless the bird is very inactive or housed in a very cool part of the house, I don't see the need.

Have you ever been around horses? They spend almost their entire lives standing up, unless they're very, very ill, and they'll pick up first one foot and then another and stand on the other three. It's undoubtedly the same with birds. When they stand on one foot, they're just resting the other one. Clyde does that sitting on my finger and his little foot disappears into his tummy feathers and his eyes get all sleepy and I expect him to start snoring! laugh.gif Doesn't mean anything's wrong -- quite the opposite. And Clyde couldn't possibly be cold in July in Central Illinois in a house with no a/c! tongue.gif
