Do you all give calcium blocks to your birds? I have calcium perches in my cages and notice that the Green Cheek, and Budgie LOVE theirs but my Alexandrine doesnt touch hers and of course Mickey hasnt touched his yet! What about your birds??

I do have mineral blocks for my birds. I recently bought the book "For the Love of Greys" and found it a very good resource book. Many people believe that Greys have a problem with low calcium so give supplements. This book says that as long as a bird is getting a proper diet that this is not really an issue. It says that the formulas of the pellet diet is well balanced so unless the vet show a low calcium through blood work it is actually dangerous to supplement. My cockatiel loves hers, and Tiki occasionally chews on his. My canary also loves his, but my grey doesn't touch it. I just make sure that she gets vegies high in calcium, like broccoli. She will also have annual blood test to make sure all her chemistry is where it should be.

I'm a firm believer in that. Some pellet brands will even put on their packaging that adding additional supplements is not recommended.

I used to have mineral block/cuttlebone in all my birds cages. For years, none of them were ever touched except the female Cockatiels. I leave theirs in the cage (as most of them are breeding hens) and removed them out of all the other cages. I just make sure to provide a well rounded diet.

I also have a calcium block and a cuttle bone in each cage and they really don't use them.
I think I'll leave them in until I know for sure. Sometimes I see little scratches on them but I don't know if it's from their beaks or from crawling on it! smile.gif

We give all of our bird cuttle bones. The love birds use their all the time, but Drago doesn't touch his. I don't worry much about it though because we provide high calcium vegetables on almost a daily basis.
