This book says that as long as a bird is getting a proper diet that this is not really an issue. It says that the formulas of the pellet diet is well balanced so unless the vet show a low calcium through blood work it is actually dangerous to supplement.
I'm a firm believer in that. Some pellet brands will even put on their packaging that adding additional supplements is not recommended.
I used to have mineral block/cuttlebone in all my birds cages. For years, none of them were ever touched except the female Cockatiels. I leave theirs in the cage (as most of them are breeding hens) and removed them out of all the other cages. I just make sure to provide a well rounded diet.
