Full Version: Screeching When We Leave The Room

Our QP Barry screeches constantly and loudly whenever we leave him alone in a room, or if he hears us talking and he cant see us. it is very annoying and also isnt good because often our housemate is in bed when this goes on.

we have tried putting him in the spare room and he usually goes quiet and we bring him out once he shuts up, but in the long term i dont think this is making any changes. he sometimes will screech while sitting on your shoulder because he can hear someone talking elsewhere. IT REALLY HURTS YOUR EARS!

any suggestions on how to tame his screeching? it is quite frustrating sometimes. My housemate yells at him when he screeches but i dont think that does any good.

thanks, Meg and Ben

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear Barry is screeching.. that is never enjoyable.. one suggestion i can think of would be to try and replace his screech with something else...

he is doing whats called a "contact" call when you (his flock) to find you... whenever he screeches try whistling back to him... it could be that maybe he'll pick up the whistle when he is calling for you instead of screeching.. ours wolf whistles now to call us so it can work smile.gif I hope that helps and I'm sure others will be around shortly to offer more advice...

Once again welcome!

Your roomie yelling at him is definitely the wrong thing to do. To him that probably sounds like human screeching and will only make him worse, or it will upset him and he'll screech because he's upset.

Clyde does that when one of us goes outside, or inside, if we're all outdoors on the deck, and the rough translation is "come BACK here!" biggrin.gif He wants us all to be where he can see us and keep an eye on us. I usually say in a calm tone, "be right back!" or make a kissy noise or something, as Andrea suggested, to get him to answer and stop squawking. Sometimes it works. tongue.gif Sometimes it doesn't. And yes, it hurts the ears when they let go with one of those while sitting on your shoulder. I usually say "ow! that's mommy's ear!" and then laugh, and he'll laugh and stop. Distract him if you can. However, a certain amount of that sort of thing is just the way birds are, and you've got to put up with it.

haha agreed... just be lucky we dont have a macaw screeching in our ear.. i cannot imagine what that must be like.. lol..

that reminded me that my hubby told me his moms neighbor down the street just got one... he was visiting and hear another neighbor using a saw or something and it was really loud.. guy stops..screech still going through the air... my hubby was puzzled so he took the dog for a walk and saw a lovely B&G lounging on playstand under an umbrella in a nearby neighbors driveway lol

tongue.gif Our little Remy does that too, especially with me first thing in the morning. If I go out of the room before opening his "door" I sure hear about it!! He calls out and I say "be right back, baby boy" and that's our little routine. wub.gif

thanks every one, We'll definately try some of these things, I like the idea of him whistling instead, but i have a feeling he doesnt like whistling because we have constantly tried to get him whistling and he just stares at us, haha.
so yeah, we will try the whistling and the "be right back" thing, sounds good!
thanks again!
if there are anymore ideas I would love to hear them!

Is your bird in a room where he can everything that is coming and going? Sorry if thiis has been asked before. Quakers like to be included in the FAMILY. They like to included in everything. Just so you know......

yeah its in the kitchen/dining room, its just not in the lounge room where we sit to watch tv.

Quakers are flock animals and they love to be in your "busy" room. So if you spend most of your time in your family room, you might want to move him closer. Just an idea. I have my birds cages in the dining room. They can see me in the living room, the kitchen and of course the dining room.

I agree. My quaker Kiwi yells for me when I head into the kitchen even though he can see me. I have his cage where he can see most of the action. Do you have a portable perch? I use that a lot especially if I'm going to be in the kitchen doing dishes or in the living room doing laundry. He doesn't yell then and he whistles and sings to me more that way.
I was in the bathroom today doing my hair and there was no yelling but he started to talk and whistle saying SUPERBIRD!! and I really think he was trying to "lure" me out of the bathroom by being cute.

my baby screeches when i leave the room as well. i have taught him to say "where are you?" to replace w/the screeching. sometimes he says it and sometimes he screeches. sometimes he screeches and tries to say "where are you?" at the same time. biggrin.gif

Thankfully, Red (QP) doesn't flock call anymore, she has adapted to our chaotic house, and knows that someone is always coming or going.

Ferris (GW Macaw) on the other hand, hasn't quite picked it up yet. He will squawk (the loudest macaw I've ever heard, ugh) over and over again if the front door opens, back door opens... pretty much anytime, but especially when I leave the room. He was given a bell, and we respond to his screech with "bell" and he'll race down and ring his bell violently. Also, I have learned that I MUST tell him good-bye and tell him that I'll be right back before I leave the house. Otherwise, I can hear him screeching all the way down the street (and unfortunately, that's NOT an exaggeration). It would be okay if noone was in the house, but normally I'm going to work, and hubby is home with the kids.

Good luck!
