Hello all,
I'm new to this forum, my name is Christine and my baby is called Bijou.
I've had him for about a year now, but his start to life was not good.
About 18 months ago, I decided that it was time to fulfill my life dream of owning a Parrot, and had visions of something on the lines of a Cockatoo or Galah, but not knowing much about Parrots in general, I decided that a lot of research needed to be done, before unleashing myself on some poor sole who's whole existance relied on my knowledge.
One day I was chatting to a neighbour who said that they new someone who was desperate for a Parrot sitter while they went on holiday as they had been let down, well I thought that it would be a great opportuniny for some hands on experience, and Bijou entered my life. I was warned not to put my hand in his cage and he wasn't friendly and would bite, and bite hard.
Well to start with, he wasn't friendly, more scared than anything and flapped about his cage squarking loudly and panting heavily everytime I went near his cage, but I spent time sat by him, talking to him and offering him goodies and slowly he settled down, by the end of the first week I put my hand in his cage and offered him more goodies and toward the end of my 2 weeks with him, he was sat on my finger letting me stroke his chest, and I had completly fallen in love with him.
When his owners came to get him, I told them what I had managed to do, and they left saying I could visit anytime I liked. I missed him like crazy and the next afternoon I just had to go and see him, but to my horror his empty cage was lodged in the grass outside their house, apparantly their 4 year old daughter had 'grabbed' him (their words, not mine) and he had bitten her, and as she had shaken him to make him let go, he had got out and flown out the house, and I was told (polite version) 'if I find him, I was to keep him as if he ever saw him again he'd ring his neck', luckily someone saw him in their garden who kept pigeons and managed to catch him, and now he lives with me.
He may not be the size of Parrot I thought I'd have, but he makes up for it in personality, he is such a character, always on the go and very entertaining, he is very friendly now and very loving, he is nearly always on my shoulder where ever I go in the house, he talks a lot and pick up new words easily, I think the funniest thing he has said was when I was singing and he told me to 'stop it' he also bosses the dog about as well, always telling him to 'stop it, down, sit, or Jackie good boy'
Oh dear I do seam to have gone on a bit, sorry folks, you can wake up now.
Christine
