Full Version: New And Wanting To Adopt A Qp
Quaker Parrots Forum > Welcome! > Introductions

Hi I'm new here and to QP's. I've had parakeets and canaries. But never had a QP. I have however, always wanted one. Well I was looking into it about a week or two ago, and have now found a breeder in Sanpoint, ID who has a 1 y/o male(she had him DNA tested) QP named, Baby Boy. She bred him and raised him from an egg, and was going to breed but changed her mind. So now, he is for sale and I would like to adopt him.

I am 38 y/o married , disabled, SAHM who has plenty of time to spend with a QP. My husband is on dialysis and so home alot too.
We have 16 y/o daughter, and a 5 y/o son. So wondering if this sounds like a good home for a QP. And if I have enough experience to get one and do right by him.

Also since he has always been living in the same home with the same woman if he would be pretty well adjusted. She told me he has not bonded to her and will go to anyone.

Welcome to the forum!

You sound like you have a great home to provide for a quaker.. I had never had anything other then budgies and a cockatiel before i got our kiwi and a lot of before the bring home date research things went smoothly... but i cant imagine what it would have been without the knowledgeable folks here so im glad you found qp.com!

I would meet the quaker you are interested in and see how it goes... you'll know if it feels right and you could have a bond with him smile.gif Give him some time to adjust to his new home and i'm sure he'll get along splendidly with everyone smile.gif

the nice thing about bringing home an older quaker is that hopefully she has already done the foundational training of good behaviour so his adjustment period will just be getting used to you and how you handle him... if he's friendly and doesn't appear to have any probs then i'd say go for it! I would also ask what vet he has been taking him to though and contact them first to see if he has had any issues since he's been owned by her...

and finally.. i would recomend getting the book "guide to quaker parrots" by Mattie Sue Athen - theres is TONS of great info in it

looking forward to hearing stories about your baby if you decide to bring him home!!!!!!

Thanks guys! Now another Q. I just had someone call and offer me a baby quaker from a batch they have. He or she would be ready in about a month. Is it better to get them young or will Baby Boy who is 1 y/o be ok with the adjustment to my home? He sounded like a good match so far. But not sure. This lady knows someone that got a 2 month old from this same breeder and she said it was mean as all heck! Now I'm nervous.

Guess it doesn't matter now. She has decided to give me a 12 wk old now instead. biggrin.gif
