Hi everyone smile.gif

So it has been an eventful few months. Boy life changes fast doesn't it.

I had Petey the Meyers parrot here for the last few months, so that he could get a lot of one-on-one time with people.

The wonderful couple I was fostering him for run a rescue, and needed help with fostering. I took in Petey, and it was an experience I will never forget wub.gif

I won't lie and say it was all fun though lol. The first month and a half was heaven <smile>. Then Petey decided the honeymoon was over, and took a bite of me hahahahahahaa. OUCH!!!!

Petey didn't just bite and run, oh nooooooooo. Petey would bite and hold on, especially after he got the big dramatic reaction out of me <blush>.

Did I stop loving the little vampire.. not a chance <chuckle>. I knew it was my own fault because Petey had me pegged from that first bite as a chicken lol.

Unfortunately, Petey liked the reaction so much that he would go for me any chance he could darnit lol. He also liked to chase me around the livingroom if I was barefoot, and didn't have a rope perch handy to get him to step up on yikes.

So after a lot of discussions with the rescue couple, we decided it was worse to keep Petey here, and keep reinforcing that it was ok to bite <blush>. I don't give up easy, and kept hoping for the extra month and a half that he'd get tired of the best game in town lol.

The good news though.. I have taken in a friend's quaker (Yogi's best friend Flirt), to see if her breathing gets better. Poor gal has been having some pretty severe allergic reactions, and the doctor seems to think it's the fiddo's <gasp>.

I'm hoping and have all fingers, and toes crossed, that it's not the fids, because this woman ADORES her parrots. It would be heartbreaking to have to see her part with her fids.

Worst case scenario, I would adopt Flirt so my friend will always be able to at least visit, and spend time with her little girl.

Please say a prayer for my friend, and hopefully it will turn out for the best for her.

Thanks
Debbie

Thanks for the update smile.gif

As for your friend, please make sure the doctor does allergy testing before she decides to rehome her birds. And, even if she tests positive to an avian allergy, there are options she may want to consider first before rehoming the birds.

Hi Carrie Anne,

She's had all kinds of testing done over the last year. Unfortunately it's all come down to asthma triggered by the fids sad.gif

The respirologist, and all the specialists have explained in great detail that her condition will get much worse, with a pretty severe outcome if she kept all the birds.

She's keeping the one bird, and I've taken in Flirt. The other birds will go to carefully selected homes. It's been a hard decision for her to finally make. She has been suffering for a year now, and it's really taken a toll on her health. Now we're all just hoping that the one bird won't affect her breathing.

She had those wicked wonderful filters in her home, and even went so far as to remove all the carpeting to cut down on the allergens. All her fids loved showering, but even with showers 3 times a week, and the air filters going, her breathing just kept getting worse.

Oh my goodness---so sorry to hear that your friend will have to give up her babies....I just can't imagine....
And I know it isn't fun to be bitten like you were...ouch, I can feel it myself....will you continue to foster?....

Debbie,
I thought my birds were causing a bad allergic reaction for me. I coughed all the time. Even My Dr told me it probably was the birds. NOT true. It was Australian Shepherd dander. When my Aussie died at 13 the coughing stopped.

I do have a tiel that putts of a lot of white powder but I have always given him spray baths every other day and he has never caused a problem. He loved his bath!!! The coughing started before the tiel ever came here.
