My cousin in Asheville, N.C. gave me this little sapling, well it was little when I got it, 10 or 12 inches tall....and in three years it has grown this much....They have plenty of them up that way, but I've never heard of them.....

Does anyone know the botanical or the scientific name for it....she gave me the common name and I will reveal it at a later time.....Just wanted to get ya'll to thinking a little or doing some research, which I haven't attempted yet to see if anything can be found on it.....
Let's have a little fun...... laugh.gif

Nope Julie do not know the name but it is really pretty. Are the flowers very fragrant? I do not know the botanical names of plants I just pick out what i like and hopefully I can grow it! LOL Julie

Julie I did fail to say the flowers are very fragrant....

Where is everybody???... ohmy.gif I know my camera doesn't take real sharp pictures like some I've seen on here, but hopefully it will suffice.....It suppose to have a little blue and red in the flowers..... rolleyes.gif and I think it is easily rooted, which I just may give it a try....
QPdad
I sent my guess by email. biggrin.gif

Nope---- laugh.gif try again Buddy.....And you notice I threw a tomato out there for the other birds....
I'll put the answer up around 10:30...or at least what I've been told the tree is called.....
kate
Those leaves look soooo familiar. But Im coming up with nothing. Still thinking. Those flowers look like some kind of honeysuckle.
LuvMyHarley1
Yes, it looks like honeysuckle, but red, white and blue (there is some blue in the 3rd picture and can see more blue in person)....She calls it the flag tree..... smile.gif
kate
Hmmmm. So ya dont know if it is related to honeysuckle or not? My guess is since you said it was fragrant that it is some type of it.
xerxeys mama
Im in suspense. I dont know the name of the tree either..
NCVon
Gosh Julie, don't know....looked around a couple search engines couldn't get anything for a flag tree. But I hope you find out what it is I would like to have one. Really pretty and neat looking!
Andie's Mom
Star Magnolia??
Cantab
I was going to say the same Star magnolia, but the leaves look slightly different. mellow.gif
Sandi Kiwis Mom
I give up and I want one......Maybe a star magnolia????
GeorgiaOnMyMind
I have NO idea.... so I'll steal someone else's guess and say Star Magnolia... mwhahahahaa
Andie's Mom
Nope, its not a star magnolia... I did some research...Star Magnolia's bloom is totally different and they appear before the tree leaf's out.

Julie said they call it a "flag tree" I'm assuming because of the little start shaped seed pods or what ever they are.

I searched the net for hours last night and the closest I could come up with was a "Honeysuckle Tree" but its blossoms aren't arranged the same on the stem/limb and from the photo's I could find it didn't have the star shaped seed pod etc. So I'm at a loss...

I did see that the "Honey Suckle Tree" is considered a Noxious weed though in certain parts of the country. Hmmmm...not sure I'd want one of those then... wink.gif If I lived closer I'd take a snip of it and the blossom to an arborist or county extention office and ask...but alas...

And with my luck...it wouldn't grow in our climate anyway... most of the pretty ones don't...Sigh sad.gif wink.gif
QPdad
My guess was a honeysuckle.

Up here there are honeysuckle trees but where I grew up, honeysuckle is a vine with the same type blooms.
Andie's Mom
Same here Buddy, its a vine here. But the blossom is very much the same. I'll be curious to know what it's really called.
Peppe
Okay Julie, did you mean 10:30 a.m. or p.m.? The name of the tree is....... You just can not keep us hanging like this urrrr...I guess you can! LOL
Andie's Mom
Julie already answered what they call it...in post 7

Ooops... sorry I thought we needed the botanical name. Sorry Julie, anyway thanks for the pictures and now the name. I never heard of a Flag Tree... Always something new to learn on the forum and sometimes it is not birdie things.

Zippy, what are you emphasizing young man???? laugh.gif Speak english....I'm going to have to come up there and have a talk with you...... tongue.gif

And I still don't have anymore information on this subject.....Connie sure has been busy with it and I appreciate that... When I talk with my cousin I a going to see if she can give me anymore information on it and to see how she originally started with it.....The hummers and butterflys love it....and so do I..... biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone for trying to help me out but guess we are at a stand still.....If anyone has any further ideas, please do share them.....I don't like unsolved mysteries..... ohmy.gif

Way2Bizzy
Julie- what's wrong with ya? You've been posting about Birds n Blooms magazine--- you should send them this picture and ask about it. They have a segment each month where they answer people's questions on identifying flowers, trees, birds, etc.

I bet they can figure it out for you smile.gif

No no, I didn't even know about the tree.

However, Julie has sent me a picture of another tree on her property which has some rather unusual blooms.

She needs to find something strong to spray that with- wouldn't want it to spread!! tongue.gif
Andie's Mom
I LOVE it!

I know the name of that one....

The multifacetedUZ bush...Or a more common name the The BS bush...LOL

Great Job Buddy, you crack me up!!!

Julie, I wouldn't be too eager to give starts from that tree, it would definitely be considered a Noxious Weed! ROFL...
Sandi Kiwis Mom
OMG, I just about fell off my chair laughing!!! That made my day. The UZ Noxious Tree laugh.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif What would we do without these two comical buds.....yep, made me laugh for a change....You two buds just keep us laughing and how you come up with these ideas is beyond me....
Great job Buddy-----

I think I am going to call cuz in N. C. and talk with her now about this mystery tree....If I find out anything interesting, I certainly will be back to post it......and at the same time ask her about the rooting process.....

Way2Bizzy, that is an excellent idea....I think I'll see if I can send it somehow through the internet....

Now, off to make my phone call....... smile.gif

LuvMyHarley1
Okay----I talked with her and now I have to wait for her to call me back... wink.gif She couldn't remember the botanical name but she said she knew who would remember it but they were out on the town for awhile and would call me back to let me know what she finds out.....And then I'll post it...........

In the meantime I ask her about the propagating process and she said the tree will have blue berries after it blooms and that is the seed....When the seed is ripe or dry you plant them in some good potting soil and just wait for it to show it's face.... rolleyes.gif

And now I know where the blue color comes in at; I didn't know it would have blue berries....so, red/white and blue...Now I got it..... laugh.gif She said the berries will look like a regular blueberry and about the same size...

SO --------If anyone wants any seed from it, let me know by leaving your name here and I'll write them down and contact you for an address when the seeds are ready in the early fall..... smile.gif
Andie's Mom
You can save me some Julie...find out what zones its good in and we'll see how it goes here. Thanks
kate
I would like to have some too.
Sandi Kiwis Mom
I would like to have some too Julie, but I want some with the face on it laugh.gif

Now Sandi---I think you will have to see Buddy on that one...he said I have that tree, but he is the one that has that tree growing right outside his bedroom window..... laugh.gif

I have written the names down----so far, Connie---Kate-----Sandi

Anybody else? I don't mind..... smile.gif

jobo2mi
Add me too, Julie. biggrin.gif That tree is VERY pretty (don't want those scary faces on MINE tho tongue.gif I think it would scare the wild birds away dry.gif ) Would be interesting to see if I could get one to grow here. I have the perfect spot for it ...
GeorgiaOnMyMind
Oh my! That is a unique tree Buddy.... sure it's not a weed wink.gif ?
Julies Jungle
You can add my name to the list if ya got enough...We love flowers and trees around here.

Hmmmm, wonder if you can smoke it?
Peppe
Julie, I would love to have some seeds if you have enough. I love flowering trees and bushes, but not ones with scary faces on them.LOL. Thanks, Julie
LuvMyHarley1
Okay---I will add the following: Peppe, Julies Jungle, and jobo along with Connie, Kate and Sandi...

And by the way, there will be plenty of seed this fall, so I'm sure there will be more than enough so I don't mind sending to anyone that would like to have some....I'm writing these names down as they come in....

And my cousin in N. C. called me today and is sending me the information she has on the tree, so when I get it, maybe it will reveal a little bit more about the mystery name of the flag tree.... tongue.gif .....and I will at that time post it for anyone that is interested.....And she did say it is a very hardy tree, will grow anywhere....Hopefully we will know more later on this next week....
mommy4syd
I would love a couple of seeds of that tree! We have a massive (almost an acre) yard right smack dab in a neighborhood in the middle of the city and we have lots of room for more trees and flowers
LuvMyHarley1
Okay I have got mommy4syd also-----Tonight I was outside and picked up on the sweetest scent, ah ha!, the flag tree, I went over and broke me a small limb and brought it in the house and wheew, just hope it isn't too strong for Harley's little lungs....gosh, it sure smells loud (does that make sense? laugh.gif ) smells loud...oh well, guess it is southern talk....
Andrea5699
hehe smells loud.. I think that makes complete sense.. sorta tongue.gif

I'd like some seed!

Some beautiful foliage you have smile.gif
LuvMyHarley1
I gotcha Andrea---that is if we can get it across the border.... tongue.gif Do you think we can?? We shouldn't have a problem with that....all we can do if find out.....
Andrea5699
Hmm.. that is an excellent question? I dont know? lol We'll haveta do some research would be very interesting to find out though!
Julies Jungle
When we came back from Mexico we had some pepper seeds and they took them from us along with some canned peppers my mother in law had fixed. I am not sure if its the same at all the borders though.
LuvMyHarley1
Below is a picture of the small limb I broke last night and brought in the house....It shows a better shot of the blooms close up, that is if it isn't too blurry...

Is there anyone else that would like to put their name in the pot for some seed this fall.....If so, just let me know.. rolleyes.gif
kate
Ive been looking under hydrangeas and even lilacs today. Those leaves sure look familiar. I had it when i cant figure something out. wacko.gif
QPdad
The only flag bush I can find is "Mussaenda frondosa" from Hawaii but that's not it.

http://www.hear.org/starr/hiplants/images/...da_frondosa.htm
Ringo's Mom
Whatever it is it sure is pretty! If you have enough seed I would love to try growing it here. Just let me know where to send my self addressed stamped envelope!
LuvMyHarley1
I gotcha name Ringo's Mom.....I'll be getting addresses from everyone that wants one early this fall when the berries come on the tree....that is what you have to plant....And it starts from seed, sprouts and starts growing real fast....the tree I'm showing is only three years old and it was just a little spike when I got it....

My cousin that gave me this tree is sending me some literature on it this week and I am so anxiously awaiting to see what it has to say....Will post when I find out....
