My cousin in Asheville, N.C. gave me this little sapling, well it was little when I got it, 10 or 12 inches tall....and in three years it has grown this much....They have plenty of them up that way, but I've never heard of them.....
Does anyone know the botanical or the scientific name for it....she gave me the common name and I will reveal it at a later time.....Just wanted to get ya'll to thinking a little or doing some research, which I haven't attempted yet to see if anything can be found on it.....
Let's have a little fun......

Julie I did fail to say the flowers are very fragrant....
Where is everybody???...

I know my camera doesn't take real sharp pictures like some I've seen on here, but hopefully it will suffice.....It suppose to have a little blue and red in the flowers.....

and I think it is easily rooted, which I just may give it a try....

Those leaves look soooo familiar. But Im coming up with nothing. Still thinking. Those flowers look like some kind of honeysuckle.
LuvMyHarley1
Aug 6 2008, 09:34 PM
Yes, it looks like honeysuckle, but red, white and blue (there is some blue in the 3rd picture and can see more blue in person)....She calls it the flag tree.....

Aug 6 2008, 09:39 PM
Hmmmm. So ya dont know if it is related to honeysuckle or not? My guess is since you said it was fragrant that it is some type of it.

I have NO idea.... so I'll steal someone else's guess and say Star Magnolia... mwhahahahaa
Andie's Mom
Aug 7 2008, 01:37 PM
Nope, its not a star magnolia... I did some research...Star Magnolia's bloom is totally different and they appear before the tree leaf's out.
Julie said they call it a "flag tree" I'm assuming because of the little start shaped seed pods or what ever they are.
I searched the net for hours last night and the closest I could come up with was a "Honeysuckle Tree" but its blossoms aren't arranged the same on the stem/limb and from the photo's I could find it didn't have the star shaped seed pod etc. So I'm at a loss...
I did see that the "Honey Suckle Tree" is considered a Noxious weed though in certain parts of the country. Hmmmm...not sure I'd want one of those then...

If I lived closer I'd take a snip of it and the blossom to an arborist or county extention office and ask...but alas...
And with my luck...it wouldn't grow in our climate anyway... most of the pretty ones don't...Sigh

My guess was a honeysuckle.
Up here there are honeysuckle trees but where I grew up, honeysuckle is a vine with the same type blooms.
Andie's Mom
Aug 7 2008, 03:11 PM
Same here Buddy, its a vine here. But the blossom is very much the same. I'll be curious to know what it's really called.

When I talk with my cousin I a going to see if she can give me anymore information on it and to see how she originally started with it.....The hummers and butterflys love it....and so do I.....
Thanks everyone for trying to help me out but guess we are at a stand still.....If anyone has any further ideas, please do share them.....I don't like unsolved mysteries.....

Julie- what's wrong with ya? You've been posting about Birds n Blooms magazine--- you should send them this picture and ask about it. They have a segment each month where they answer people's questions on identifying flowers, trees, birds, etc.
I bet they can figure it out for you

What would we do without these two comical buds.....yep, made me laugh for a change....You two buds just keep us laughing and how you come up with these ideas is beyond me....
Great job Buddy-----
I think I am going to call cuz in N. C. and talk with her now about this mystery tree....If I find out anything interesting, I certainly will be back to post it......and at the same time ask her about the rooting process.....
Way2Bizzy, that is an excellent idea....I think I'll see if I can send it somehow through the internet....
Now, off to make my phone call.......
LuvMyHarley1
Aug 8 2008, 07:37 PM
Okay----I talked with her and now I have to wait for her to call me back...

She couldn't remember the botanical name but she said she knew who would remember it but they were out on the town for awhile and would call me back to let me know what she finds out.....And then I'll post it...........
In the meantime I ask her about the propagating process and she said the tree will have blue berries after it blooms and that is the seed....When the seed is ripe or dry you plant them in some good potting soil and just wait for it to show it's face....
And now I know where the blue color comes in at; I didn't know it would have blue berries....so, red/white and blue...Now I got it.....

She said the berries will look like a regular blueberry and about the same size...
SO --------If anyone wants any seed from it, let me know by leaving your name here and I'll write them down and contact you for an address when the seeds are ready in the early fall.....

Okay---I will add the following: Peppe, Julies Jungle, and jobo along with Connie, Kate and Sandi...
And by the way, there will be plenty of seed this fall, so I'm sure there will be more than enough so I don't mind sending to anyone that would like to have some....I'm writing these names down as they come in....
And my cousin in N. C. called me today and is sending me the information she has on the tree, so when I get it, maybe it will reveal a little bit more about the mystery name of the flag tree....

.....and I will at that time post it for anyone that is interested.....And she did say it is a very hardy tree, will grow anywhere....Hopefully we will know more later on this next week....

I gotcha name Ringo's Mom.....I'll be getting addresses from everyone that wants one early this fall when the berries come on the tree....that is what you have to plant....And it starts from seed, sprouts and starts growing real fast....the tree I'm showing is only three years old and it was just a little spike when I got it....
My cousin that gave me this tree is sending me some literature on it this week and I am so anxiously awaiting to see what it has to say....Will post when I find out....
