so my qp always have dropping. every time i take him out of the cage and place it on my shoulder, it will put dropping on me most of the time. is it healthy for them to have dropping this much? and is there anyway to teach them how to hold it?

Welcome to the forum!!!

Parrots normally go about every 10 to 15 minutes. They always save a few special ones back for the purpose of dropping them on our clothes.

The white and brown streak down the back of your shirt is the official badge of a true bird person and should be proudly displayed for all to behold.

Hee hee. Welcome to the World of Poo! laugh.gif

Seriously, these guys poop a lot. I think they poop on average about every 10-20 minutes. However, it can be more frequent if:

-They have just eaten
-They are excited (i.e. I've just been let out of my cage!)
-They are frightened
-They are in a new or unusual circumstance
-Many other reasons tongue.gif

Every weekday morning Horatio sits on his little stand on the table and eats porridge out of my bowl as I'm having breakfast. As soon as the bowl is empty and I pick him up, he poops. Well, after several "accidents", I now know to hold him away from me until the deed is done, then I only have the floor to clean (not myself!).

It sounds as if your little monster is pretty "regular" when he comes out of his cage, so just hold him away from you (or over a suitable area) until he poops. Some people have been able to partially toilet train their QP's, but I think it's the exception rather than the rule. Most of us just buy a lot of wipers.

Yep, the others have answered your question. That is a quaker for you......LOL.....Welcome to the Forum and the world of being owned by a quaker parrot.

It is possible to potty train them but you need to be very consistant about it and you need to learn the signals and the body language to bealbe to spot when he needs to go before he actually does.

The thing to remember is that some birds will become so in tuned to being told to potty that they will hold it too long, and bacteria can grow and cause all sorts of problems for him health wise with their kidneys and their liver, so you have to make sure that he know's its alright to poop when ever he needs to but if he's on you he needs to move someplace so he doesn't poop on you. It can be done but it takes patience and lots of work and lots of handiwipes.

One of the reasons that a bird will poop as soon as you pick him up is because in the wild when they start to fly they will dump their load to make themselves weigh less so its easier for them to fly. Since birds don't truly have a "stomach" like ours food passes from their crop to their digestive tract and its a very short distnace for most birds. So what goes in, soon comes out; about every 10-15 minutes.

I firmly believe that Clyde waits until he's on my shoulder to poo so he can do it on me. laugh.gif Buy a big container of Shout to treat the stains on your shirts and just figure that it's your bird's way of showing how much he loves you.
Sai Yan
alright, i will learn how to love my bird that way. i just hate to keep changing clothes after he pooped on me. i don't mind if he poops on the floor. anyway, thx for the advices.

I always drape a towel over my shoulders or just wear an old shirt when I take out Ava, our Quaker. Ava likes to poop on me, but she also tries to chew holes in my shirt! I have Ava and a two year old son, so, needless to say, I rarely get to wear nice clothes!

I use the baby 'burping' towels thrown over my shoulder or chesrt b/c I just can't come to terms with poop ON me no matter how cute Sprout is. That's just not Ok. The burping towels are cheap, and I can keep a stash clean and its easy to use!

yeah its normal...I am a teacher and the kids know to check for poop for me in the morning!
