Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted about Kiwi, our green cheek conure. He's a wonderful pet and has become quite a part of our family. Recently, though, I've notices a few little cracks on his beak. He's not acting at all different. Is this a sign of anything I should worry about?

Ava has a few cracks on her beak, too. The vet said it might be because she's young (about 4 1/2 months old), or it could be something wrong. So in a few weeks Ava is getting some blood tests. I guess I am saying I have no idea, but it's something a vet should check out. Their beaks are VERY important to their wellbeing!

It is most likely just flaking. This is very normal and common. Do you have pictures at all??

Click to view attachment you can see two "cracks" on the top and one on the bottom beak. Do you think it's flaking?

Mollie has those type of tiny cracks. I think it is normal and just the way their beaks grow out. Kind of like the imperfections in our fingernails. Some of our more experienced friends will take a look at Kiwi and give you their advice as well. But I would say it looks okay.

Beaks grow in layers, and it is just flaking. Flaking is excess beak that nearly every parrot has. In the wild where they are more active in foraging it would be worn down quicker then it grows. Try giving more toys to destroy or a sandy perch if it bothers you. My quaker and grey actually keep thier own beaks filled down to perfections, but my macaws and the rest do not, so it is not really a problem, it is pure cosmetic.
