Full Version: Temper Tantrums...

Yoshi08
Hello,

This is our first post besides the introduction and we're hoping someone might be able to help us out with our Yoshi!

Yoshi is a fun, loving QP who is only about 14-15 weeks old. He loves to come out of his cage and play with us, but sometimes, not always, when we have to put him back into his cage, he starts flapping his wings like a mad man and squawks at us! He jumps back and forth from his perch to his rope and then flaps his wings like crazy again! He isn't biting though.

We were just wondering if this is something a lot of QP do when they're put back into their cages ( it doesn't happen all the time)... Is he trying to tell us he's upset and wants to be let back out??? OR is this some kind of bizzare happy sign?? huh.gif

Thanks,
Paula

I've had Kiwi for 8 years and she never fails to have a royal tantrum when you lock that cage door behind her. The only time she's good about having to go in her cage is at night when I say a really soft "night night, baby" She goes right in and I lock her up. She snuggles into her happy hut and is bye bye fir the night.

Most of the time I ignore the tantrums and they only last a minute or so. Now and then I start talking to her in almost a whisper...soft and sweet and she stops in order to losten closely to what I am saying and that's the end of it.

Hi Paula!

Tucker does that every night when it's time for bed and I cover his cage. Hmmmm ... I never considered it a temper tantrum. I just thought he was shakin' his sillies out. When Tucker doesn't want to go back into his cage after a fun playtime, he does everything he can to perch onto my hand and not step down in his cage.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like a tantrum to me- my gcc tries to get out of going back to his cage, too. He'll jump up onto my head, climb around to my back, nip at my fingers, etc to get away from the door. Once he's inside he hops back and forth along the front of the cage (pacing) and whining. Poor little guy is like a ticked off 2 year-old kid smile.gif
I'd just ignore it and NOT give him any attention at all when he's acting that way so there is no reward. When he's quiet you can talk to him to reward the good behavior.

When it's time to go back into the cage, Clyde first tries the honey: "Pretty bird! Awww." <kissing sound>"
Then the vinegar. The flapping and squawking and, I kid you not: "STINKER!" laugh.gif Of course, a few moments later he's discovered he's in the mood for a snack and has started munching on his food and has forgotten all about being mad.

Perfectly normal, I'd say. biggrin.gif

hi, nothing makes sense in "bird world"..but i have found: if you give them a "heads up"..in other words..just don't have the bird out and about and SUDDENLY, just put in the cage...let them know in a way that it is getting time to go to the cage...as you put them back, maybe also add some food as well to let them know you are not mad.
good luck.

Casey's Mom
Casey does a similar thing but only at night time and not when I put her back into the cage, lol. Sometime at night when she gets really tired she'll run around on the top of the cage squaking and she gets really low and flaps like crazy, kind of like a panic attack... it's hard to describe. wacko.gif She only ever does this at night time though. She's always more than willing to go into her cage... during the day she only goes in her cage when we have to go out so we always give her a treat (either an almond sliver or a pumpkin seed) and say we'll be right back, she'll wave and say "buh bye!" and then she goes into her cage willingly to get her treat. biggrin.gif She loves "night night" time and will announce it when she's ready biggrin.gif so she goes willingly into her cage then too... but she does have those little 'spaz attacks' sometimes when she's ready to go into her cage at night.

Hope that helps, so I rambled so much! blush.gif Welcome!!!

Awww that sounds so sweet. Pretty Boy(Harley) is pretty good about going into his cage during the day but at night would rather sleep on or by me than in the cage. So we are still working on that. I treat him when he goes in his cage too. But at night he just doesn't seem to want to..lol. His current cage is only 18" but we are updating him to a 57" by 40" something by 27" soon.
