Hello all,

My name is Lora, and I am brand new to the world of Quaker Parrots. My grand daughters convinced me to stop in at an exotic bird store just to look, of course, and when I came out, I was smitten! That was a lilttle over a month ago. Since then, my husband and I have been preparing to bring a new quaker baby home. The big event is Friday and I'm really excited. 'The baby' is still being hand fed but is ready now for just two feedings a day by hand. I have gone by to visit several times each week. We are not quite settled on a name yet but I think it will be 'Honeydew'. I have been checking this website for all kinds of valuable information. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the rest of the quaker parents. By the way, I haven't had birds since I was in high school so this is like starting all over again. Wish me luck! wink.gif

Do you know how to hand feed? I have never done it, but from reading here, I understand that it can be pretty tricky. Most here really recomend waiting until a bird is fully weaned to take it home.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum

Hi Lora!! Welcome to the forum!!

To fully enjoy your baby bird, I suggest leaving the bird with the store until the bird is fully weaned. Trust me on this one, you'll have enough stuff to be worrying about that you don't need the additional worry regarding the handfeeding/weaning process. There is no benefit to you handfeeding the bird yourself. It doesn't create a stronger bond at all.

Looking forward to hearing more about this little one.

Yes I do! I've had the opportunity with this little one. The guy at the store was pretty confident that this one was ready to go cause he's already eating other food. He did suggest the hand feeding for the sake of bonding, but the lilttle guy is not totally dependent on it. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new baby! smile.gif I too would suggest waiting until your baby is fully weaned until you bring him home, much less stressful! Like some others have said, handfeeding does not create a better bond between you and him, it's a total myth. wink.gif

Welcome! I've heard a lot of green names but never Honeydew! I LOVE it! biggrin.gif wub.gif

hi Lora and Welcome! I to brought my baby home and he was supposed to be weaned but I ended up having to feed him at least twice a day w/ formula, thankfully I am an experienced hand feeder so it wasnt a huge deal but I to would recommend leaving HoneyDew at the breeder/handfeeder for at least a week after he/she is TOTALLY weaned off of any formula! Its a lot easier on you the new owner and you all can and will still bond! Trust me on that!!
