Kiwi is my new 'baby" he is 14 and a Q.P.
He says several words and sings seveal different things I was wondering though is there any way to teach him new words at his age? I would like to get him to say I love you or love you especially.
Is there a trick to it? I know QP are not mimics and can understand to a certain level communication : ie: when kiwi says come here it means come here he's just not talking to hear himself talk LOL
I wasn't sure if I can teach him or not but any help is appreciated. He is very comical and sweet but I know Quakers have the capacity to say a lot more than he can..although I do know people who have quakers who never speak so...I guess I'm lucky LOL

Congrats on adopting Kiwi! smile.gif

I'm sure they can learn new words at any age. smile.gif Like you said, you can't really 'teach' them words per say (they pick up what they want to learn!) but just talk to Kiwi like you would a small child and hopefully he'll pick up some new words. They tend to learn things that are said with a lot of excitment or things that you use everyday/repeated a lot like "Good Morning!" "Night Night" "Love you" "come here!" stuff like that. smile.gif

Good luck, hopefully he'll surprise you with a "love you!" sometime! biggrin.gif

I believe birds can learn new words at any age. A good friend of mine had a Quaker who, up til his passing, was still learning new words. He lived to be in his late 20's.

Just keep repeating the words to him. I find that repetition is the best way to teach a bird a new word. wink.gif

Thanks for the replys. I will keep in mind the emphasis on repatition and excitment maybe that will work..
I think also being in a new setting maybe he will be open to new things?
Wow late 20s! Like I said Kiwi is 14 and I liked that these little guys can live into their 30's. To have that much time with him would be wonderful.
Thanks for the encouragement!
