So we are finishing up work to the rest of the house and I want to make a 'safe' outdoor place for the big guys. This was the setup when they were with their previous owners (aren't they beautiful wub.gif )

I thought something like that would work for us but can't find anything to make it from that they won't chomp right through. The only stainless wire I can find just seems flimsy..If I use a different type of wire and cover it really well with sisal would it be safe? I'm just unsure with the power of their beaks........ Or anyone have any ideas on where to get heavy stainless wire from?

They are beautiful! wub.gif

Hmmm, a friend of a friend has built each room of his house into bird cages using some sort of giant stainless steel fencing material... it holds everything from a Quaker to a Hyacinth and U2, so it is very durable. (His house is crazy! It's so cool though!) I can ask my friend what he's used as I'm sure you could use it to build an enclosure outside. smile.gif

Also, I was passing a small construction site the other day (redoing the outside of an apartment building) and they had these giant metal fences put up (like 12 feet high) around where they were working and they looked like a huge bird cage and my friend thought it would be perfect (if it was indeed stainless steel) to make an outdoor enclosure for her Macaws outside (even the bar spacing was perfect!). So I wonder if it would be possible to contact some contruction companies and see if they know where you could buy that... I've been googling for the past 15 minutes and can't find anything! blink.gif

Good luck! smile.gif I'll definitely ask my friend about the material used on those cages though! smile.gif

Construction I know something about.

The wire on those fences was probably (like 90% sure) galvanized, and therefore wouldn't be bird safe.

Yeah, I figured they would be galvanized but was wondering if there was a SS equivalent...

I'll probably be seeing my bird friend tomorrow so I'll ask her about what her friend has used. smile.gif

It is possible to get bird safe wire. I wish I could help about where...but I know it exists because I was looking into it several months ago and found a place that sold it. I'll try and find the link if I have a chance!

There are companies out there that will powder coat materials for you... so you could always have the fence you choose powder coated for safety.

As for finding something they won't chomp through, you'd wind up paying a FORTUNE for stainless steel... but what if you made a similar set up to the old owners (wood frame) and put clear plexi glass on the inside of it? That way the big guys couldn't chew through the beams. You could drill plenty of dime sized holes into the plexi-glass for air flow. Then you are only replacing single piece of plexi if the big guys managed to chew it up. From what you were saying before they are not big on flying (yet) so they might not try to escape the comfort of their play porch.

Thx for the ideas smile.gif I think we are going with the wood porch/ enclosure but I like the long boing in the picture but am having trouble recreating it.
We did finally go ahead and clip Sebastion's wings. The suprise flights were scaring him and causing him to panic and I was afraid he would hurt himself sad.gif

Have you considered using a heavy netting for the "bars?"
Like a fisherman's net?
