TOBY UNDERSTANDS THE THINGS THAT ARE SAID TO HIM. HE EVEN DOES THINGS THAT GETS ME TO SAY SOMETHING FUNNY.
LIKE WHEN HE DROPS SOMETHING ON THE FLOOR FROM THE TOP OF HIS CAGE I SAY UH O. HE LOOKS AT WHAT HE DROPPED AND THEN LOOKS AT ME AND DOES IT AGAIN. AND I COULD'VE THOUGHT I HEARD HIM SAY WHAT. BUT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WISHFUL THINKING. IT SEEMS LIKE A LIFETIME THAT I HAVE HAD HIM BUT IT HAS ONLY BEEN ABOUT 3 WEEKS MAYBE 4. AND TOBY DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO TALK AT ALL. IT THERE ANYTHING DIFFERENT I CAN DO.

My Budy is 4years old and doesn`t talk I think thats because I have another Bird ..I have head what I think is hello !! and come on, but I don`t mind if my boys don`t talk, and yes I agree they know what your saying ..I think some just choose not to talk, many here have mentioned they have closet talker (talk when no one is around) but at 4 months your baby is still young so I am sure given time and if you say the same short clear words to him he is more than likely to start to talk..don`t worry and don`t be in a hurry , he may talk he may not I am sure you will love him just the same..

And could I please ask you is there any reason you type all in capitals, its my belief thats they way you type if you are YELLING !!! and I am sure you don`t mean to be yelling at anyone.. smile.gif

Have a nice day mine is over and I am off to bed...

Sorry, I type in capitals at work all the time and i guess it is just a habit. At work we do this so it makes it easier for fedex and so all of are capitals are in the right place. And no it doesn't matter if he talks or not. Yes i will still love him just the same. Porky,my dearly departed qp, didn't say a word and my heart was full of love for him.

I didn`t think you were yelling ..lol..and there is every chance your little guy will talk after all you have only had him a few weeks..My Buddy started to talk while he was in Quarentine but now he is with Sunny and Sunny only talks bird talk I guess he doesn`t feel the need , although I have at time heard what sounds like come on and hello ! its very rare , I figure if he was an only fid he would probably talk..
Good luck..and goodnight from me have a great Tuesday ours is over.. Yawn time for bed..

Just keeping talking to him!

There are, of course, no guarantees but that's the best bet. Also, you may just have a closet talker. For example, my quaker, Georgia, CAN TALK! I have HEARD her when I'm in the other room. She can, at least, say, "Hi Georgia." But I have never seen her talk. And I've had her for two and a half years! I guess she's shy and doesn't want to show me until it's perfect laugh.gif

Also, some birds aren't great talkers so it's hard to recognize it when they do talk. It took me FOREVER to realize that when Monet (my white bellied caique) steps up and makes a rhythmic little whistle she's actually trying to say "step up." So while your bird is learning you may not recognize the attempts.

And I just have to add, even though it has been said, that while talking is nice... it really doesn't affect the bond you have with a bird. Trust me, your Toby will find plenty of ways to share his "opinions" even if he never talks biggrin.gif

It seems like some quakers are talkers, others are noise makers and then there are others who really don't care for either. I have had Morgad for over 12 years now and he is not a talker. The only two words he says are peek a boo and pretty bird (once in a while) and he has said his name maybe 10 times. He is how ever a mimicer of noises and he loves to whistle. So just give your fid time and see what he turns out to be.

Just spend alot of time talking to your Q.P. to encourage it. They really tnd to whisper and mumble to practice the words and phrases. But as stated above, not all of them will talk. I would sing and talk as much as possible!

I've had my Quaker about 3 wks and tonight he said his first word. I was amazed! I kind of knew he was getting ready to talk because he was doing alot of the mumbling. But thought it would be awhile. Is yours mumbling yet? That is how the practice. So don't give up! smile.gif

I sing "There was a mommy who had a bird and Kiwi was his nam-o K I W I etc" Every time I hit the K I W I kiwi will whisper "kiwi" so he knows its his name but he won't spell it! LOL

I also sing the quaker song to him in hopes of him someday singing even part of it and he won't. I caught him whistling the first part though so I know he knows it in his little feathered head!

Kiwi says a number of things but his fav are Super bird (followed by the whistle) and Gooooood BOooooy just the way I say it. Its so crystal clear it sometimes creeps me out LOL

But. With that said. he won't learn too many new words easily and I've heard some quakers never talk. I think they are great anyhow and I love when I kiss Kiwi all over he just laughs.

Sorry I haven't been on for awhile. Three days before my post I became a grandma for the first time. A little beautiful girl.
Anyway 2 days after i wrote this post, Toby started to say words. I was so shocked that I laughed. That was the first thing that Toby did was laugh. Anyway he now says, uh-o,hi,huh,what and yesterday my husband heard him say mom when i left the room.
It wouldn't have mattered if he didn't talk buy now that he does I am very happy. He does sound funny when he talks. Some words are clear and with some he has a different sound in his voice.
