I went to the Charlotte bird fair yesterday. I knew I shouldn't go, but I finally gave in to myself. Not good. I ended up spending $400.00 of my Germany trip money.
I bougt 2 corner cages, that I've been wanting. They sell for $400.00 EACH! I got them for $145.00 each! Ya can't pass that kind of deal up.
Let's see, what else... Oh yeh, this!

This is Lola
She's a Lutino Peach Face.
It's really not Lola. I thought it would be a little early to shove a camera in her face so Becky let me use hers. Their identical.
I can never be around any animal that are for sale. I have no self control.

I just
knew you didn't leave there empty-handed
That's fantastic- congrats on the new baby. I know what you mean though, that's exactly why I wouldn't go to the fair this weekend.
Can't wait to see pics of the real thing

Its probably a good thing that we don't have any bird fairs close by...for just that very reason

As long as you had a good time that's all that matters... RIGHT??????
Thanks for sharing your photo's of your new family member!

I'm probably going to get in trouble here

but I am
100% against bird fairs where birds are sold!
Where's the responsibility from the breeders? What kind of conscientious breeder will just sell a bird to whoever will stump up the asking price without knowing anything about the buyer?
I have seen some real horrors at bird fairs. Now I only go to them to stand outside and protest against the barbarity!

Gee, thanks for not sharing in my happiness and changing the whole point of this thread. Don't you think it would be better for you to put your tyrade on your own thread?
To the rest of you, thanks for the well wishes. You're all the best!

CQ is an adovcate for parrots, which I think we can all respect.
Congratulations on Lola (beautiful name!) and do be sure to quaratine just in case. You're going to LOVE lovebirds. They are very quaker-esque in terms of much attitude they fit into a small body.

You go girl!!!
Sometimes folks need a gentle reminder that their opinion is not reflective of the masses. We have lots of fine folks on this very forum that are breeders and are responsible sellers. Bird Fairs as well as breeders are like any other "business"... there's good and not so good. My take on this is if you are responsible enough to be an ACTIVE member of this and other bird forums, you are most likeky knowledgable enough to make your own decisions on where and when to acquire a bird.Nuff about that..... now for the important part of this "speech"....
CONGRATULATIONS Paula!!!! Lola is one gorgeous bird. And just for the record... you spent at the bird fair ALMOST what the danged plumber charged me on Saturday! LOL Sure wish i had been there to see you get in trouble!

Paula and Readers: Though it is always a good thing to offer opinions, remember readers this is just one mans opinion of a situation. Don't let it take away from your happiness and JOY Paula!!!
CQ: I think this is an opinion that would have been better kept to yourself. Sometimes we have to ask ourselves before we post "WHAT PURPOSE WILL THIS POST SERVE?" and "WILL THIS POST ADD ANYTHING POSITIVE, FACTUAL OR EDUCATIONAL?" It was not in any way helpful to this post or poster. Please think before you post about how and who the post could affect. This was a positive post that now has been brought down and I for one was very uncomfotable when I read your post. If I was uncomfotable with your post, can you imagine how this made Paula feel? If you wanted to post this I feel you should have posted it in a new Topic.

Oooops. Yup. I made myself unpopular again.
I'm sorry, Paula.
Lola is a sweet little bird. When I saw the pic my heart was taken by her, but bird fairs are such cruel things, in my opinion, that the memories of some of the things that I have seen drove such thought from my mind, overriding my initial desire to express my good wishes.
Such is the fate of the inveterate, incorrigible campaigner.

No hard feelings. I was feeling a litte sensitive that day for some reason.
Why don't you start a post abot Bird Fairs. We can all tell the good things and the bad things that we see. I have more good things to say. Well, actually I only have one bad.
Again, thanks for the well wishes and the comments on the name. As most of you know, Juliesjungle brought a beautiful CAG into my life named Lili. Lola just seemed to fit with Lili.

PAULA:
Congratulations on the new bird. What a beauty! I don't care where it is, if I go near birds, I have to be very careful as I feel my "mama bird syndrome" coming on. I see, I want! Especially if the bird looks like it may be in a potentially bad situation. Some vendor's at bird fairs are good people and have to put the birds in small cages just long enough to take them to the fair. I know they can't haul that many huge cages there.
CQ:
I understand your point of view. By offering the birds to anyone who walks by, they don't seem to be concerned about the birds getting good homes, just like the puppy mills. People just raise them for what $ they can get out of them.
Hmmmmm, lets see now. CAN IT!!!! You couldn't make yourself unpopular here if you busted your butt trying!
Paula is right. A thread about what people have found good and bad at bird fairs would be very interesting.
My Casper was at a bird fair...so near DEATH. I hadn't wanted to go there, just went with a friend, but if I hadn't, he'd have been dead before the night was over. I guess it was a GOOD thing that I went. Not many people would have bought a bird that was lying there almost dead. She said she couldn't sell him and I offered $10. I've had him 7 or 8 years (too old to remember). He went blind, but he's a happy, talking, singing little man!

Lola and I are making progress already, considering there was no interaction with her and the vendor/breeder. I think she might have been meant for breeding but didn't.
Yesterday, I left her cage door open and she eventually came out and stayed on top of it. She flew down twice but it was when a noise startled her. I toweled her both times as she would have nothing to do with me touching her. She eventually went into the cage on her own for dinner.
Today it started out the same. She flew down once and I had to towel her again, with a small dish towel. I decided to hold her close to me for a few minutes and it seemed to work. She put her head down and let me scratch her neck. MANY MANY pin feathers. She was quiet and didn't move, even when I opened up the towel a bit.
Early this evening she flew down again and I had to towel her again. I was headed to the shower anyway so I took her with me. She sat on the shower perch like an angel and watched me wash my hair. I got out of the shower, got my small Budgie size playstand, put it in the bathtub (it's very deep) and she sat right there with no problem at all, watching me again. I was done so I thought I'd start using the step up command. Of course it didn't work but I wanted her to start hearing it as I was picking her up.
Soooo, in conclusion, I feel like we're making real progress already.
