Hi Everyone:
Hank has a new home! Thanks to Carrie and everyone else for all of your encouraging and informational posts. They really helped me through this difficult process. In the end, I identified a wonderful bird lover who lives very close to me and is very happy to welcome Hank into his flock. In addition to getting a new owner who will actually be able to spend much more time with him, Hank will also have some brothers and sisters to socialize with (an Amazon, a female QP and a couple of lovebirds - all in separate cages).
Hank's new owner is self admittedly not one who will come on this site and keep you updated but he has promised to stay in touch with me (I can visit whenever I want) and I'll keep you posted as to his progress.
Thanks again,
Iain

Hi everyone:
I was able to take Hank to his new home and owner on Saturday (not a fun day) and I thankfully believe that he is taking this much better than me. Here are some exerpts from a couple of emails that I've already received from his new owner (Max is a 19 year old Amazon and JJ is a 4 1/2 year old female QP):
email from 08/31/2008:
Late yesterday I put Max and JJ in the living room on their perches so I could let Hank out of his cage for a while and give myself an opportunity to set his cage up etc. Getting him to go back in his cage was a challenge. He did not want to step up on my finger or step up on a perch. I just let him stay out as long as he wanted and watched for him to put himself back in the cage. This morning when I went to clean his cage etc. I was of course nipped. As is JJ/Max and many other birds he is quite cage protective/aggressive. So I just let him fly around the den while the others were with me for breakfast etc. Once again Hank put himself back in the cage. He is eating very well which does surprise me. I thought he might not eat well for a couple days. He has thus far not touched his vegetables but is definitely eating his pellets and the few seeds I mixed in with them. He gladly takes a "treat" out of my hand and does it nicely. Anything else I try in the way of hand contact or what he perceives as invasion of his cage is met with an open beak. This is definitely to be expected. In a couple days when I feel he is more relaxed with his new environment I will clips his wings. When a birds wings are clipped it cuts down considerably on their aggression. One day at a time Hank and I will bond. I am looking forward to having him join Max, JJ and I for our morning breakfast and evening dinner in the living/dinning room. After his wings are clipped and he learns he can't fly he will stay on his gym(s) and his cage as the others do. It means a lot to me that you have entrusted his care to me and I will do everything possible to live up to that trust. I am serious when I tell you that you are welcome to visit anytime. Both Hank and I will enjoy your visit. Wishing you well.

Oh HanksDad, I am soo relieved to hear that you found a good home for Hank...it sounds like he will be a member of a very loving Flock.
I'm sorry that you had to rehome him, but, soo glad that you loved him enough to find the right home. Jo

While it is sad that you had to re-home Hank, I couldn't keep from thinking AWWWWWWWW, what a nice and comforting e-mail from his new owner. I'm sure everything will fall right into place and Hank will soon be KING HANK!

What a great update!!! I know how brutal the decision to rehome Hank was for you, Iain. You were faced with something no bird owner ever wants to be faced with....your health, or your bird.
Glad to hear that Hank is doing so well!!!

Thanks Carrie, I'm not sure that I could have had this type of outcome if it wasn't for you and everyone else who responded to my posts. Hank has a great new home and I know that he will enjoy every day going forward. He has a new flock now and from what I understand; he is fitting in just as well as I could have hoped for.
