Parrots can get mites. Usually you see little pin head dark dots on them -under the feathers. If it has them you need to get your bird treatment fast-I lost 2 birds yrs. ago (2 canary's) I bought one that had them and they jumped unto the healthy bird and both died in days. Or it could be the diet or it could be nothing. Someone else will give you some clues I'm sure.

Welcome to the forum. I'll leave the lice/mite question to someone who knows a bit more on the subject because that is something that I've not experienced. Did you just get him? If so, have you taken him to the vet yet? I'd suggest doing that because our qp was ill when we got him, but I didn't know at all because they try really hard not to show it. It took a blood test to find out that he had an infection. Don't think that's why yours is scratching...just wanted to suggest that if you just got him, you get him checked.

As far as itching, mine will scratch a lot when he is getting new pin feathers in...especially around his face and head. I just do a little 'preening' for him at night which entails rubbing those hard feeling feathers around between your fingers until the shaft breaks up. (you will see stuff that looks like dandruff falling off). Also, does he like baths? You should try to get him to take baths a few times a week as well.

Just a couple of ideas.

Yes don`t go buying over the counter stuff just in case he has lice , could just be he is moulting and growing new feathers ..
I would suggest find an avian vet and have a check up just to be sure all is o.k...
