Hi guys, we just got back from the vet who said that our quaker parrot has a respritory infection. He is moving very slowly and breathing very heavily. They gave us trimethoprim poly sul opth (thats just whats on the bottle) and we just gave him his dosage. They recommended keeping him in a humid room so we have been running the shower and staying with him in there. He doesnt want to eat or drink so we are giving him water through the syringe. Is there anything else i can do? Has anybody elses parrot had these problems? We really would appreciate any help.

knock on wood, my babies have been healthy since i've had them. i don't have any advice (sorry) but i do hope your little one gets to feeling better soon. give the meds some time to kick in and kick butt and i'm sure things will be back to normal soon.

How long has it been since he has ate? I would try to cook some grits or oatmeal and try to get him to eat that out of a spoon. If he refuses to eat from a spoon you can always resort back to handfeeding formula to him. I have had to do that when I have had a sick one that refused to eat. They don't realize they have to eat. If you need help in how to feed him. Just let us know. There is a correct and safe way to do it.

Thank you very much for responding. Right now he is sleeping in his cage away from the other birds, and he is still breathing heavy. I hope the medicine does work. We have been giving him water and put the humidifier on for awhile which actually stopped him from weezing. If he does not eat his regular food tomorrow what would be the safest thing to feet him. I have heard that yogurt might be good...do you recommend that? Thank you so much

My baby just got over a two month illness almost died, keep him warm 85ish degrees. Handfeed him if he wont eat, small frequent feedings, if he cant keep weight on get instant ounces it really works, mix handfeeding formula with pedialyte for babies this will keep him hydrated. Keep him quiet and resting as much as possible no stress. And the most important part is PRAY! With God Anything is possible! I know what you are going through. I am Shangawus mom I got him Aug 30th this year and he was sick up until about two weeks ago. I will Pray for him and you guys too!

Did the vet give you a anti fungal to have with the antibiotics (Nilstat or similar) I believe its usual to have as well as an antibiotic at least the vets here do ...
Praying for your little guy ..
If you can buy a humidifier I don`t believe they are too expensive any good Chemist /Pharmacy should have them ...
