My grandfather brought me a ton of fresh okra (he keeps a huge veggie garden year round) and I was just wondering if the fids can eat it. I checked the list and didn't see it listed as good or bad. I would think it would be OK but you never know!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OkraWe eat it fried (breaded), in soups, gumbo, mixed with other veggies on top of pasta, etc. Its one of those things that you either love or hate, I think

Although, sometimes you can love it one way and hate it another (fried vs in pasta).

Tsk, tsk.... poor, poor Donut family. It's a shame you can't experience a good dish of fried okra. I rarely indulge as an adult (mainly cause I don't cook unless there's no way around it) but when I was young my Mom would always make Sunday dinners of fried chicken, mashed taters & gravy, and fried okra. (no wonder us kids all grew up to be "fluffy"

It's not a question of can, but will. If it's colored green duke won't eat it. Not even green apples! He's such a butt.

It's far more popular in the southern U.S. than anywhere else in the country. I'd never heard of it before we moved to Oklahoma in the 80s, and EVERYONE there seemed to consider it a basic food group.

I can eat it breaded and fried, but I'm not crazy about it, and since we came home to Illinois, I've only encountered it a couple of times. Never considered giving it to Clyde. I'd have to eat some first to convince him to try it -- he's very suspicious of new foods.

My grandmother used to serve okra boiled-- and yes, it is VERY slimy that way. Ugh- but when it's sliced and pan-fried, either breaded or "naked", it's not slimy.

I love okra...can't imagine not having it!! And I must be in the minority because I love it the best in gumbo or just boiled....esp. with black eyed peas...yum!!! It is slimy, but not bitter at all. My fids love it...they love blackeyed peas as well...my hubby, on the other hand, is from England and thinks it's about the most disgusting thing he ever saw!!! I say he just doesn't know what he's missing!!!

Slic102 I have to side with your Hubby. I think that stuff is so disgusting. For those of you who like it.......that is a good thing. Someone has to like it, otherwise why would we have it....ha ha, lmbo. I tried it once back in the 80's. It was canned and I put it in a pan on the stove, kind of how you would heat up any canned vegetable. Needless to say everyone in my family would not allow me to put it on their plates just because of the way it looked. That was the first and last time I even saw ocra.

Sandi Kiwis Mom - They make it canned? Yuck. I can only imagine how nasty that would be! I have only had it fresh.
I love Okra. Growing up in Louisiana it was a staple! I can eat it raw or cooked or in something but I prefer it fried! My husband won;t touch the stuff regardless of how it is served.
How do you guys feed it to your birds? Raw, cooked?

Yuck...canned okra is rather gross...I only like fresh okra...boiled or fried. I feed fids either fresh, or frozen cooked in microwave. Simon won't eat any sort of raw veggies!! My dad was raised on a farm, so I like all those southern veggies!! (turnip greens anyone???)

It can be slimy or not, depending on how you fix it. I've never had it canned but that does not sound tasty, LOL! Maybe in gumbo if you were going to cook it for extended periods of time, it might be OK to use canned....

Mmmmm.... I love that, here in Israel we call it bamia and it's used mostly in Sephardic recipes. It's absolutely excellent when served with cuba - a tomato soup with bamia and roasted meat wrapped in dough, with rice on the side. Kiwi absolutely loves bamia, can't get enough of it!

I love fried okra!! As somebody mentioned, it doesn't have to be slimy and it's only bitter if it's too mature.
The only way I can find it up here in yankee land is frozen or canned so I guess Willie will just have to miss out.
