i lost my cockatiel india tonight i had returned from vacation and she was staying at my mom's house so i went to pick her up tonight. i was trying to take her and her cage in at the same time so she was on my shoulder. something scared her and she flew away. the bad thing about it is it was already dark when it happened. my mom and i looked everywhere for her with a flashlight and nothing. she isn't calling or making any sound. and there are possums around here that hang out in the bushes. i'm gonna get up early tomorrow morning and look for her. i will never forgive myself if i don't find her. i loved her so much. i hope she got in a tree around where i park my car so possums can't get her. i miss her so much and i want nothing more than my baby back.

I'm sorry that this has happened, Hopefully you'll find her in the morning. Stay optimistic and make up some flyers and call all the vets offices in a 5 - 10 mile radius and also place an ad in the lost and found and on craigslist you never know someone might find her and give you a call. Good Luck!

I think she will be alright in the colder weather and yes, if you can get your hands on her, do take her to the vet and get a thorough checkup....
Birds do survive in the cooler temperatures....Again, as Sandi stated, put her cage outside and if you are up, it wouldn't hurt to go out and try to call to her...I know it is late and don't know what kind of neighborhood you are in, but I wouldn't let that stop me........And do make sure you are outside at dawn and start calling and looking.
Again, wishing you the best....

well this morning i got up and looked for her no luck but i got in my car to get my wallet and when i locked it i always beep it to make sure it's locked and she started calling me like crazy! i found her in a tree close to my car. so i got her and was so happy but as i was walking to my apartment with her she flew away again!

i watched where she went and she is in the neighborhood across the street. a friend of mine and i walked around the block and heard her calling but i had to get back to work so we left but remembered where she was at. my mom went to look for her and found her exactly where we thought she was at but as the lady who's tree she was in tried to get a ladder set up to get her she flew again!

but this time she flew into a tree behind where we found her a second time. so she's safe for now but in a few hours it's gonna be dark again. i'm afraid she's gonna end up spending another cold night in a tree but i will spend a good part of the day tomorrow trying to get her out of the tree. when she sees either myself or my mother she screams like crazy. i just hope i can get her back home soon because i'm sure she's hungry, thirsty, and scared. i hope we can get her back. i miss her so much. i feel so stupid that when i had her this morning i didn't have a good enough hold of her. let this be a lesson to us all to always keep our birds clipped! i certainly will i always have before i just let it slip once. and i am never taking her outside again unless she's in a box where she's safe and secure. i will keep everyone updated on the progress of getting her back thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

That is kind of good news and bad. When you get her again, put her in your shirt or put her in something safe. She, no doubt is going to be harder to catch because she is scared.

Oh my goodness---how terrible she got lose again....
When you do get ahold of her again, put your hands up close to her neck which will be on top of her wings, therefore, it will be a tighter grip and she can't flap her wings....as you know, that is how they get started, they start flapping...So get a good hold on her....
I do hope you get India back and hopefully this evening...will check back soon.....

well on the plus side you know she's safe. on the down side, she's still outside. definitely don't give up. sounds like she's itching to get home to her family but i'm sure being outside is scary for a bird who's not used to that. i know my cat gets all sorts of freaked out if we take him out of the house.
good luck on finding indy again and getting her into the house.

thank you for your thoughts and prayers. i went back this evening as the sun was setting to the tree we thought she flew in the third time and called and called and she never answered. so now i'm wondering if she's really in the tree or not or if it's because the sun is setting and she's getting ready for bed and not responding because of that. but it's going to be hard to spot her if she answers back tomorrow she blends in real well. i'm so scared for her. i never used to be a bird person we always had cats and dogs growing up and i was attached to them, but not as attached as i am to Emma and India. i just want her back. Justin, I know what you're going through with Kiwi. and it feels horrible.

my mom and i just came back after searching for her and no luck. no sight or hearing of her. i'm afraid she's gone for good. she's either flown farther away or an animal has gotten her or someone has found her and kept her for a pet. i am so devastated at the fact that i had her yesterday and was stupid enough to not have a good hold of her while taking her into my apartment. i don't think i will ever get over this. my mom today said maybe it just wasn't meant to be or i was meant to have another bird. i think that means she might get me a new bird and that's fine, but no new bird will ever take the place of India. she was my baby. she was sweet and loved to cuddle with me and i loved her so much. i am so devastated. i don't know what to do anymore.

i haven't given up hope yet i sent an email to parrot 911 about India and i recieved an email today from a volunteer telling me they posted my picture of her and information about her on their website. also in their email they gave tips and in one said that during the first month birds stay within a one mile radius of the home. so tomorrow my mom and i are going back down the street we think she's in and we are taking my quaker Emma out to see if the sounds she makes will make India call out to us. but of course before we do that i'm taking Emma to get her wings clipped as short as they can get because i don't want to loose both of them. i don't want to get my hopes up but i hope we find her tomorrow.

DON`T even take your Quaker out with CLIPPED wings or you could have 2 missing birds....a gust of wind can lift a bird even with clipped wings NO BIRD should be taken outside unleashed or un cages its just plain dangerous...This is my opinion and I bet many others will agree , please please don`t do it...

I have, in the past, taken my Quaker Buttons outside on my shoulder without a harness or carrier. That was before I knew the truth... that birds that are clipped can still fly when the conditions are favorable for it. I was really fortunate not to have lost her and I'll never take any bird outside again without a carrier or harness. I've read a lot of threads like yours recently and it's so very sad. I really hope you find India soon. Majj is right though. If you take Emma out without being in her carrier, you could end up completely devastated with two birds gone instead of one. For reference, you can search YouTube with the name Tui. It's a very talented African Grey who caught a gust of wind after being startled and has yet to be reunited with its owner. Hope you find India. I'll keep her in my prayers!

Oh I just saw this thread, but don't give up! If you saw her this many times I really think you will get her back in the next day or so, some people never get this far. It sounds like she really wants to come home! I would make some flyers in case she finds another human to fly to and they will know to bring her back, I really think you will get her back just keep trying

And check craigslist too
Edit: Sorry I didn't see that this thread had 2 pages I was replying to one of your earlier posts...

My heart goes out to you....keep looking and posting flyers with a picture and advertise on the radio and internet and knock on neighbors doors and post in local pet stores and businesses near you or in a certain mile radius of you.
I just talked to a customer where I work that had a cockatiel that was found somewhere in Fredericksburg Va and it has a band on it I want to say MD 05 so it is 3 years old from a Maryland breeder and even though it was found........they never found the owner, but this lady loves this bird and is taking great care of it and now wants to get it a friend she has so fallen in love with cockatiels........
I had a clipped 9 week old lovebird fly away about the length of a football field the day I was transferring it from my car to the new owner's car and it caught some wind and it was unbeleivable how far that bird flew. Luckily it stayed in a tree for a few minutes then flew to a parking lot and we caught it, but I have learned a hard lesson the hard way. They can still fly very well even when clipped--just need the right gust of wind.
Keep posting and let us know the updates!

I had a conure pick his lock and take off, hunted all day and finally gave up. Left his cage outside, hanging up with the door proped open. Lo and behold, the next morning, he was busy eating in his cage. Needless to say, I haven't trusted a cage door since.
At the time, we lived up in the foothills, in really dence forest, with lots of wildlife, so I too was afraid that something would get him, but they didn't.
So good luck, I'll say a prayer for you and don't give up hope.
Keep us posted.

It would be good if you had a small travel cage to take Emma in. I wouldn't take her out there on my shoulder or in my hands. I'd make sure the cage was tied shut because if you happened to drop it, it could fly open or break apart and both birds may be lost.
I pray you will find India and get her safely home again. Poor baby must be scared out of her wits and very hungry.
Be blessed. I hope tomorrow is your day

yet another day and still no India. i miss her so much, but i think this is it. my mom and I don't hear or see her anywhere. Even with Emma's help still we didn't find anything. And with the way she picks up noises really well like a cell phone or anything else she could sound like the birds outside now and we'll never be able to tell if it's her. I just hope she's happy and safe and eating ok and learning how to defend herself. I feel so bad that I made that bad decision Thursday night to try to take both her and the cage inside at the same time. i just don't know what to do now. i've let the local pet store know so i guess all i can do now is wait and hope that someone has found her and has the decency to find her owner and return her.

The good news is you know she isn't going far...don't give up. Beep the horn again so she hears it and hopefully will answer. She obviously associates that tone with you.
If you do manage to spot her talk to her calmly and try and get her to come to you, she's probably pretty hungry by now so show her something that she relates to as food. As Sandi suggested if you get your hands on her again; put her under your shirt wo its dark and she will hopefully relax and feel safe.
If she'll step up on your hand wrap your thumb over both feet so she isn't able to get away as you are putting her under your shirt.
Good Luck!

Dont give up. I found Mikey after she had been gone for a week and she had both wings clipped. Make sure you have contacted the local vets, animal shelters and an advertisement in the local paper can work wonders - this is how I found Mikey. I also did letter box drops and spoke with people who I would come across in the street asking if they had seen her. Put flyers on telegraph poles. Put a flyer in the local pet shop. Leave no stone unturned. Mind you, you will probably come across a few birds that aren't yours but you never know your luck. It's no good feeling bad about what happened - you will never do it again. Learn from that mistake (as we all do) and keep looking!!!! Determination can be a wonderful thing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I wish for India's safe return.

I hope you get India back. I have a friend that has a few African Grey's. They have their own outdoor aviary and one day one of them flew up into a really tall tree. This particular bird knows his Shakespear....and the next day they heard him reciting MacBeth and knew he was still in the tree. It took a couple of days but the bird finally figured out it just had to fly back down so it could be safely caught and put back in the cage.......no joke, he just kept telling my friend that she was, "a baaaaaaad lady."
Good luck. I too will think good thoughts.

I completely agree with the advice on not taking your quaker with to find India unless he is harnessed or in a carrier. Clipped wings are "supposed" to keep a bird from getting any heigth when they take off. It does not prevent them from flying....just prevents them from going very far. And I could see a BIG gust of wind taking a quaker pretty far. Bird harnesses kind of remind me of the leashes you put on small toddlers. I think they are funny looking.....great but funny. Tey putting one on a ferret....it's real fun.
Good luck. I hope you find her soon.

I'm so sorry, I found my QP and tried hard to find his home, I think somewhere someone must be heartbroken, but then no takers on my ads and efforts.
He had picked his chest clean and is such a sweet bird, people suggest that he was released intentionally, but I would tell you to keep posting ads and such, flyers, whatever you can do to at least try to reach her.
