Well I think Pickles needs a happy hut...poor thing sleeps on the bottom of her cage or on a hard perch and I think she would appreciate something soft...problem is I had one in there for about a month and Pickles just pooed on it dry.gif

(I had put it on the bottom of her cage because that's where she sleeps) but now that she sleeps kinda everywhere I want to try again but this time on the top part of her cage. So what do you guys use to attach them? Mine had little quicklink things but it just didn't look all that secure?

Do places sell bird cage shelves where I could set it on?

All of mine that have the happy huts I hang from the top of the cage, then run a rope perch under it so they can go in either end or come out either end and don't feel trapped. Most birds when they sleep will go to the highest perch in their cage to perch for the night. So if the happy hut is the highest thing that is where they head. Berry (parrotlet) has had one for about a month and he is just starting to explore it, in fact, I noticed last night he sits just on the edge of it facing inside I guess so he can back right up onto the rope perch if he needs to take off. Spirit (quaker) has one and has had it for 3 months and he sits on top of it, but I know eventually he will probably go inside, if not at least he is comfortable sitting on it and he is happy. Sometimes it can take a while for them to get used to things like that in their cage.

Clyde JUST started using his after having had it for about three months! His came with steel link things to hang it with and I hung it from the top of his cage and put short perches at each end so he could go in one end and out the other. Put it in there and just leave it -- it could take awhile for Pickles to figure out it's something nice and not scary. Now that Clyde has tried his, he adores it and is so pleased with himself. biggrin.gif Now ... if I could just get Bonnie to try HERS.

Thanks guys I will be sure to try it again next time I go to Petco smile.gif And that's a good idea with the rope perch, she has three of those so maybe one will work at least. And I'll leave it in there for the whole time too, I think I gave up too early on the other one and forgot to not put it directly under perches lol

Jessica---also try inserting a piece of cardboard to fit the inside of the bottom of the hut, then get you some cheap wash cloths at the dollar store (a pkg of them is very cheap) and lay one on top of the cardboard. or if you can sew; sew a seam up each long side of the cloth (that is after you fold it) and then sew up one of the shorter sides, then you can slip the cardboard inside the washcloth and change it out as necessary....
That is how I do Harley's....that is when he slept in it.........

que sleeps in her jolly ball i was going thru a new hut every two weeks at $20-30 a pop it was getting expensive as well as her safety
heres a pic of her jolly ball the blue thing is what left of her hut its gone now

Thanks both of you and that picture is adorable wub.gif Too bad Petco doesn't have any of those jolly balls...
helwa
none of my birds like the happy huts, plus the morning poop pile inside is never pleasant lol
wide
so i started making my own smile.gif its a rectangle fabric folded in half with a perch hooks between. so its a tent with no floor, so no poop pile and the fabric and easily be taken off and washed smile.gif

i have made several with flannel or fleece on one side and a nice pretty, colorful or neat patterned cotton on the other side, so its reversible for either cold or warm nights smile.gif

for keets i used fabric 11 inches long and 7 inches wide, sew the seems and turn it right side out, and i used grommets to attach the perch, which is a wooden dowel i cut down to size and screwed in hooks to hook into the grommets smile.gif takes about 5 minutes to make

Derek, What size cage do you have?? or maybe I got a jolly that was too big, but it takes up way too much of Skye's cage, yet he looks to uncomfortable sleeping on a perch, won't use happy hut at all....now that its cold he too sleeps on bottom of cage...Oh bother ! Debbie

Chili really likes his jolly ball. I purchased it at DJFeathers.com. It was a little spendy, but it has a lot of things hanging from it, and they have replacement items. I found a site where you can buy just the ball, and if you are handy, you can make your own toys on it. http://www.parrottoyangels.com/supplies.html
And thanks to Majj, I purchased at Walmart, in the auto department, a fleece seatbelt cover. (Thanks Majj, great idea). They have several different colors Not too exciting, like black and grey.

Jessica, there is a neat bird place in Elko. Its just west past the Featherlite dealer.

It is sort of a small warehouse, they have tons of toys and cages. Fairly reasonable. It is a dangerous place for me to go, I always walk out of there with some little item for the spoiled Greeny,

I think that I heard that Tammy at DJ Feathers is the one that makes the Jolly Balls.. I know when I went to pick one up she told me that she was about to make a few more as she had some orders.

And SweetPea sleeps in his Happy Hut, but I have 2 so when one becomes a Crappy Hut I can change it out and wash the soiled one. smile.gif

Jessica, I had the same problem with Simon and his happy hut, but I, like you, don't think I left it in there long enough. He has this wire rack thing that we call his "toaster rack" that he loves to sleep on. I have another happy hut now, but have not put it in his cage yet. I was worried that his wire rack would hurt his feet, but someone (majj I think) suggested that I put some fabric on it, so I got some nice soft flannel from the fabric store and wrapped it around the wire rack (not really wire, stainless steel) and he loves that. I just change it every few days, but he sort of hangs his butt off the back of it, so it really doesn't get poopy often. I love the jolly balls, think I may have to get one of those for Simon for Christmas!:)

Debbie..

If your cage is too small to put the Jolly ball in why not try a PVC pipe ..I got mine from a hardware store before I had the jolly balls and the boys still play in them so have left them in...You can use hobby cord and string them up high in the cage , just like a happy hut with a perch running either end ..Mine are just on the boys platform....

debbie sorry for thelate reply que has a big cage her jolly ball is 10 inch too

rolleyes.gif Your little hut is really neat. I know my neighbor has made a ton of bird houses out of pvc, and hangs them on tall fence posts. I have read though, PVC is not good for anyone. I have made window perches from pvc, but not sure how safe they are.

This is what I read: PVC Tubes: Available at your local home improvement store. Many pet owners build play gyms or foraging toys out of them. PVC is one of the biggest contributors to the flood of toxic substances that can cause severe problems for human health and the environment. Vinyl chloride is a known carcinogen. PVC is an environmental poison because of its high chlorine content and chemical additives. PVC bio-accumulates and becomes stored in body fat of animals and humans. With cumulative exposure, they are potential carcinogens and may cause reproductive or developmental health problems. Potentially harmful chemicals called phthalates are added to PVC to make it soft, for example for use in infant toys and can leach out of toys that are chewed and sucked. Phthalates are known to cause liver and kidney damage, endocrine disruption, reproductive system damage and cancer.

It took Chili quite some time to use his happy hut. After I put the Jolly Ball in his cage, he never used the hut again. He likes the Jolly Ball the best, although, even though I have a huge cage for him, it takes up quite a bit of room. Oh well, anything for the spoiled green chick. Speaking of spoiled, I may have to go Love On The Wing today, my bird store, and see what I can buy for him.
