I have not had a Quaker parrot since 2002. Back then I had Merlin, who even had his own webcam. In the late '90s, I was very involved in the bird forums and helped produce a Quaker parrot calendar for a couple of years. Those were good times. After the sudden loss of one of my cats in July, I started to think about having another Quaker.
Today I brought home a 5 mo. old green that I got at Tree Top Bird Center in Richardson, TX (great store, btw). I'm starting all over again, so I'll have to do lots of reading up to refresh my memory on their care, etc. My DH has never been around birds before, so boy is he in for a surprise.
The little "guy" has hardly made a peep today, but I know that's all about to change. Don't know the sex yet, but I'm trying to think of names. The store sent me home with what they said he is currently eating (a mix of seed, fruit, nuts, etc.). I'm hoping to gradually wean him off that and onto Roudybush pellets (which my last Quaker ate). He knows how to step up.
He's sleeping on the bottom of his cage tonite. I was really excited and I started to put toys and a happy hut in there for him, but I didn't want to overwhelm him, so I took them out thinking I should introduce things gradually. He perched several times, but seems to prefer the floor for now. That's bugging me, but I guess his new cage is really big and overwhelming to him combined with his new surroundings. I have him covered with a sheet (until I wash his new cage cover). I wonder if I should have started with a smaller cage.
I am looking forward to getting to know everyone, their fids, my own new fid, and participating on this forum. I especially love that there's a spell check here.
I'll post a picture tomorrow. I am so excited!
