Happy November! I had tried to post on Friday with an update, and I was sooo happy with actually taking the time to do it ... then I inadvertently closed the page and lost the post ... so I will try again now.
I hope November is finding everyone well! It has been busy busy busy here, and I am looking forward to a vacation to Mexico in the beginning of December. It is getting closer, and I am getting more excited. I actually felt accomplished when my updated passport arrived Friday!
Some of you have heard about the newest Blue Fronted Amazon to join us in rescue. His name is Stanley, and he is at least 10 years old, though we do not know how much older. Stanley came to us with nails that were over 2 inches long!

He has a broken toe on his foot that was never taken care of, so it healed being bent under his foot, and causes him to limp. Stanley cannot perch on this foot, and is obviously a bit unueasy being up high on perches, etc. The only thing this bird has going for him is his appetite. We went to Dr. Cira two weeks ago when he first arrived and he was put on Baytril to help clear up a respiratory infection and to assist with ending his diarrhea.
Well Stanley wasn't showing improvement, so we went back to the vet Saturday. Dr. Cira believes that Stanley may be going into liver failure, though she didn't want to do blood work yet because he is so stressed. She changed his med to clavamox, and prescribed a nasal drop and gentimyacin that I have to insert in his vent twice a day. She also believes he has some intestinal bacteria.
Stanley looks miserable. He shows no emotion in his eyes, in re to pinning and dilating. He looks sad and broken. I am open to suggestions here, my friends. I am trying everything I know and things I can think of to break through to him. I have to towel him to give him his meds, and he hates it. I think he truly believes that all humans are bad and will cause harm to him. Even at Dwight's lowest point, there was communication. He didn't trust me, but he was willing to -- if that makes sense. Stanley, I fear, is not.
So we are caring for him the best I know how. He is in a carrier now, with a perch down low so he doesn't have far to topple if he loses his balance. His three dishes are filled with fruit, veg, snacks, nuts, and treats. He seems to be eating well. Actually, the only highlight of the vet visit is that his weight held steady at 413 grams. I was pleased that he didn't lose any due to stress.
Please keep your fingers crossed and send this guy some healing thoughts. He needs all of the positivity he can get.
We have also added a Goffins and a Greater Sulphur Crested Too to the flock. The Goffins is Cricket, and she is five years old. Cricket's feather is in very poor condition, and she is a barberer, a plucker and a mutilator. Cricket has this amazing spirit about her and is absolutely darling. We have been trying new foods, etc, and she is adapting to her new surroundings quite well. Both she and Laika came to our bird club meeting yesterday for show and tell with my presentation on Too's! Cricket loved on everyone, and was a very good girl staying on her playstand the entire time. Laika, on the other hand, decided he needed a few laps of flying about the store and refused to stay put, LOL.

Cricket was taken in by Amazing Grace rescue in Mascoutah IL, and since they were full to the brim, she came to join us. I have a very strong suspicion that this little girl is here to stay.
The Greater Sulphur Crested Too is Ozzy. Ozzy is 34ish years old, and believed to have been wild caught. He is a charmer!

Such a sweet man -- I could seriously just sit with him for days. He doesn't know how to step up, so we have our work cut out for us there. He is very well adjusted, loves his toys, plays for hours on end, and eats like a piggy! The only issue we are having is that he only eats orange food, LOL!

Again, I am open for suggestions ...
Here are some pics of Cricket and Ozzy. I didn't want to stress Stanley any more than necessary, so I don't have any of him yet.
Hugs!
J
