Full Version: Is My Morning Routine Hurting Dumplinī?

Dumplin'
Well, Dumplinī loves to sit on the counter with me in the morning while I wash my face, brush my teeth, do my hair, ect, ect. But I heard that it is bad to spray perfume with them right there because it could...cut off their breathing? and kill them? Is this true? I have not sprayed perfume on with him in the same room with me, but what about hairspray, room spray, and things like that? Basically my question is, is this true, that perfume can be deadly to birds?

Siobhan
I wouldn't spray anything with Dumplin in the room. Use stick or roll-on deodorant (rather than a spray) and don't use hairspray or room freshener or perfume with him in the room. You can still have Dumplin with you while you do the other things, but move him somewhere else before spraying anything, and don't take him in the room until it's been aired out. The pressurized aerosol cans contain all sorts of stuff that's not good for them and not good for you or the environment, either, and no matter how careful you are about where you aim, overspray goes EVERYWHERE and some could get in his eyes or on his feathers (and he could then ingest it when he's preening).

Birds respiratory systems are highly specialized, mainly to allow flight. Therefore, it is believed that bird respiratory systems are much more susceptible to aerosols and other air born "contaminants" which could lead to adverse health problems. Basically, it is best not to subject them to perfumes, hair sprays, etc.

I agree with others, just NOT a good idea...

Perfumes, potpourri, adhesives, glues, aerosol sprays, cleaning products, and of course, teflon, can all be toxic.

Aerosol cans have many chemicals that could harm their delicate air sacs. Also alot of hair sprays and things have synthetic fragrances that are basically just a chemical formula. I would suggest using those in a well ventalated area or in a bathroom with a fan... that would get the smells out faster. I let my birdy in with me but I use a organic facial wash and no spray on my hair. So you could let him stay with you when your doing the simple things like washing your face but put him back in his cage then spray your stuff. Be careful. Simple things can mess up a birdy's respiratory system.

If you stop to think about it, What did miners do in the early days before gas detectors were invented? They sent a canary in to the mines and if there were harmful gases they would soon know because the canary would quickly die.

Anything that has the ability to become airborne can be potentially dangerous to birds. They do have very sepecialized respiratory systems and because of this very minute particles can be devistating. If it were me I would be very careful what is sprayed around your bird, Also if you use hair spray whether it be pump spray or aeresol spray I'd be very careful because you bird while being on your shoulder will probably try and groom you and can actually get the shelac (sp) that is used in hairspray of your hair and it can poison them as well.

I know...just one more thing to worry about where your birdies are concerned!

I concure with everyone else here no sprays of any kind ....my guys come into the shower with me but I remove then before I do any spraying (deoderant/perfume etc)...

Also remember the scent that lingers after you spray is not good for them. I can't stand it when people come in my house with strong perfume on.
My inlaws stay here for a week or two at a time and they're getting up there in age. My father in law is getting alzhiemers disease. A couple weeks ago they were here and from our bathroom which is right off our bedroom and about 10 feet from my bird room I could hear something strange. I wasn't sure what it was, but then I smelled it. When my father in law left, I checked his toiletry bag and there was an aeresol spray can of body deoderant in there. He had been spraying that and quite a bit of it too. I was so angry because the smell went straight into my bird room. I have told them so many times that's a no no and I guess he forgot. He felt really bad, but from now on I will be checking his toiletry bag when he gets here. I may be considered nosey to them from now on, but too bad, it's my house and those little birds are my responsibility!!!!
