I hope this doesn't come through twice, I think I deleted the other one.
Can dried cattail leaves be used for chew toys? We have a 30,000 gal swimming pool that we converted into a "pond" about 10 years ago. I know there is no run off or chemicals in there of any kind. The chew strips that you buy (that are rather expensive) look like they are made of very similar material. Just checking to see if anyone knows of anything that might be in the chemical makeup of the dried cattail fiber. I cut them off every year and throw them away, now maybe I might have a good use for them.

I guess no one had any ideas about the cattails so I started looking on the Internet. I have found several sites that talk about all parts of the cattail being eaten. They have been eaten for many years going back to the Indians. Many parts of the plant are used for numerous things, food, medicinal etc. Here is a site that talks about it. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EPG/is_/ai_16829016

The article talks about the moose eating the leaves, the mice eating the dried leaves, etc.. I'll continue to look on the Internet but it seems like the dried leaves would make good chew thingies.
