We are getting a scarlet macaw, Savannah. She was 11 weeks old on Monday. I went to visit her today and after trying to pierce my finger with her nails (she then got them clipped and acted like a baby about it) she spent several minutes flapping her wings, nearly achieving lift off.
I had her up on my arm and I was standing up. She took off! Her very first flight and I was there to see it. She flew about 25 feet and managed to land, not crash. I think it scared the heck out of her because she kept those wings folded down after I picked her up.
She is getting to be such a big girl! (Not really, she is pretty petite for a macaw but she is growing up)

Awww, she's growing up!
I remember when my friend was raising two Scarlets last year and we were there when they were learning how to fly, they were so clumsy flapping their big wings every where... it was cute!

Awww...Savanah is such a beauty! I just love the big parrots and would dearly love to have a maccaw, but hubby would freak right out...lol. Congrats on being with her for her "maiden voyage"!

Apparently Savannah has been a flying fool since Thursday, taking every chance she could to fly off. When I was visiting her today, she had her first clip ::sniffle:: A few minutes later, Tammy handed me a little sealed packet of feathers with a tag that said "Baby's First Clip Savannah" I thought it was so cute. Then I got to hold Homer, a B&G, while he got clipped and the feathers saved for his owners.
Homer is just a few weeks older than Savannah but much larger and so uncoordinated. He clenches his feet and can't balance, clouting me in the face with his wings. It was such a relief to hold Savannah again, who is lighter and can balance.
It was also Macaw and 'Too day. Everyone seemed to bring in either a macaw, a cockatoo or both while we were there. (Sandra, Gosha's mom and dad were there and Tiki's mom and dad as well...they brought Morgan rather than Pebbles with them. Pebbles pooped on him right before they left so she got left at home
