Full Version: Poncho Won't Stop Chewing Her Flight Feathers

Poncho has been over preening her flight feathers since August. The first vet I took her to pulled all her flight feathers to make her stop. The same thing happened last year but she only did it to one side and she stopped after the vet pulled them.
This time she will not stop. As soon as they grow she bites them to the point where she draws a little blood on one of the new ones that grow in. I have to keep trimming them very short. I took her to another vet. She did a CBC, liver, kidney, and stool sample. The results showed low calcium and protein. She is under weight. She is very picky. She won't eat pellets. I've been trying to get her to eat them. She gets angry when I try to feed her cabbage, broccoli, and other things she should be eating. She'll chew on food and spit it out including with the pellets. I am very upset. I spend a lot of time trying to feed her. She won't stop ruining her flight feathers. She has always been a great flyer. Please help.

Ooh, billy I'm sorry you are going through this...does Poncho show any interest in food that you are eating? If you pretend to eat pellets and veggies and get excited about it they usually want some too. Right now I'm eating crackers and Pickles is as close to me as she can get, with her little eyeball on them. (She only got 1 lol) That might help with the food.

And I've heard good things about Avi-Calm, I have never used it but others have and they can tell you if you should try it or not it's something to consider, it may stop Poncho from chewing his feathers.

Hope this helped, and good luck!

Yes I eat with her next to me, she'll try food and spit it right out. I will ask the vet about avi-calm. it's worth a shot.
Love the picture.
