Hello all......I am absolutely new to QP's but have had cockatiels in the past. I am adopting two quakers tomorrow and need to know what all I need for them to bring them home. They are coming with a cage, however, I don't think it is big enough for them as the guy says he only has one toy in there and from all the research that I've done, there should be several toys to keep them entertained with. Also, what is the best thing to feed them? I am so looking forward to getting them and want to be absolutely the best mommy I can be as they are 6 months old and both girls (have been sexed)! Please, any and all advice and help is welcome!!!

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif

Yes, they will definitely need more than one toy... try to get a variety of kinds to keep their minds stimulated. smile.gif

I personally would recommend a second cage. There is a large chance that they will be bonded together since they are caged together, when two birds are bonded they aren't usually as interested in people so two cages is usually best. smile.gif

As for food, hopefully they are coming with whatever they are used to eating. They should continue to eat whatever they are used to for the first few weeks (until they settle in) and then when they are more comfortable you can switch them if it's necessary. Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease so a good pelleted diet is always recommended along with some fresh veggies/fruits and grains/legumes. smile.gif Seed should only be a treat...

Give them a little while to settle in as they will probably be confused in the begininng. The best piece of advice I received here when I first joined was only give them as much attention now as you will be able to for the next 20-30 years! wink.gif

Welcome! Looking forward to hearing all about them!

Welcome to the forum biggrin.gif My two Quakers have about 50 toys that I rotate in and out of their inside and outside cages and their play tree...Seems like every time I go to PetCo or PetSmart, along with needed food items, somehow a toy or two finds its way into the cart~!

Welcome! Two at once!! You're a brave person! biggrin.gif Seriously though, I noticed that by your post you may have your Quakers already. Did you get them yet? What are they like? Do you have pics? Have you decided to get another cage? I'm excited for you. I LOVE Quakers. wub.gif You'll love them too. Congrats on your adoptions!

Hello all and I picked them up today!! Of course, they aren't as tame as the man told me they were, but that's okay......I am absolutely in love with them already!! Yes, I did purchase the separate cages so they can bond to us. They are already very spoiled girls cuz they got two brand new nice cages and LOTS of toys and treats and new Zupreem food that has to be introduced slowly because the man I got them from had NO clue on what to feed them and was feeding them large parrot food!! Well, they actually LOVE the Zupreem and have picked it out and left their other food in the dish....lol.....looks like they are gonna be easy to switch over. They do NOT step up however so we will be working diligently on this and any advice will be soooooo appreciated as to helping them along. They do not bite however so that is a good thing. They will mouth you, but with no pressure. I am prepared for the bird bites though and so is the rest of my family.....lol......I have forewarned everyone that the day WILL come and NOT to over react to the bite. I will be taking pics tomorrow of them as I of course think they are BEAUTIFUL and will try and post some tomorrow. Thank you all for the warm welcome and I will be keeping in touch as I'm sure I will have numerous questions.....even though I have read everything there is on them and many of the old threads here to prepare myself, but there is NOTHING like advice and help from actual owners and lovers of the quaker!!! biggrin.gif

Proud mommy to Baby and Kiki

Oh and by the way....Tree Top Bird Center in Carrolton, TX is absolutely great and already has PLENTY of my money from bringing the girls home today.....lol

Ohhhh....a fellow treetop lover!!! That is the best birdie shop I've ever been into! The owner, Debbie, is an absolute doll!! I got my caique there, and like you, lots and lots of toys and a new cage. Did you see the light blue qp in one of the side cages? I was in there the other day and fell in love with it. Also love the hawkheads...been visiting them since they were still being handfed. BTW, it's in Richardson, not Carrolton. There is one in Carrolton, but it's Kookaburro, and not nearly as good as Treetop.

Congrats on your new babies!! I assume that you are in the Dallas area...what part? We now live by White Rock Lake....and if you've not seen the wild qp's there, it's definitely worth a visit. They nest over by the TXU power plant on the south side of the lake. Can't wait for pics of your new flockmates!!:)

Well, I took the advice of the wonderful people at Tree Top and found Kiki a wonderful new home as she was the holy terror out of the two and trying to protect Baby at all costs even with out broken skin....lol. They said she would probably do better in a new home and so would Baby without her and they would both be better pets for it. It was a hard decision, but I did want to do what was best for the both of them to become great fids!!! Well, so with that being said.....Tree Top supplied my new addition, Petri (unsure of sex), to the family. At first, he was scared to death and according to them was the least aggressive out of the 3 quakers they had left....lol. Great I thought......but when I sat with him for about 30 mins and loved on him and snuggled him.....he started stepping up and giving me kisses!!! I was soooo excited and I scooped him up and they clipped his wings (don't matter cuz he is a master of flying....lol) and his nails and we were off to the his new home!! Well, he is absolutely a sweetheart after all and loves to snuggle and give kisses and so does Baby!! They are so spoiled.....I got them both Happy Huts today and new swings as well......they surely won't get bored in their cages when they are in there.....lol.....it's like a jungle gym!!! Anyway, I do have pics so I hope you enjoy!!!

Now can't you see why I am already in love?? wub.gif The first 3 are of Baby (one with Paris the chi), and the last two are Petri!!! Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachmentClick to view attachment

You are exactly right, it is in Richardson......I was reading my Quaker book on the way there yesterday and wasn't paying much attention to where we were going or where we were, but I got back there just fine today....lol....and will be going back many more times I'm sure!!! I actually live about an hour northeast of Dallas and made a trip there yesterday and one today.....lol. I haven't seen the wild qp's, but I am definately gonna have to go see them now!!! I think that would be an absolutely awesome sight!! Debbie is an absolute doll and was there yesterday and we met her then. I almost brought the light blue qp home....lol.....but decided I really wanted to stick with another green right now. The hawkheads are absolutely gorgeous!!! I have never seen one before now, but they are completely striking birds!! Tree Top is excellent and I probably won't go anywhere else.....lol!!!

Awwww....so you got a 3rd baby there? How cool! Just wait till you see that place in the spring and summer when they have TONS of babies in the nursery! Every sort of baby parrot imaginable, and all the "parronts to be" visiting them...it's so cool. If you saw the 3 caiques in the cage by the back, that was where my Pogo was too. One of those caiques is his brother....the one with the darker orangish yellow on his neck and chest. We never do our birdy/birdy supply shopping anywhere else now that we found that place. The last few times Debbie has given us "the frequent flyer discount" which was 20% off our entire purchase. I really love her, she is so nice. You said you live an hour northeast? Where abouts? Just wondering because I lived in Longview which is in East Texas for 12 years. There is also a really cool pet shop there called "Wet Pets and Critters"...similar to Treetop in that they have the birds out and such.

I actually live close to Greenville. It isn't too far from Longview. I have been there several times, but didn't know about the pet shop!! We may have to visit there sometime....lol. Hope you have a great day!
