i'm new around here
i make my own toys and perches
and basically spend the day doing all i can to keep them entertained
and love new ideas
so why are people saving feathers?
is it to check condition and health?
or is there some neat reason i don't know about?

I keep Darwin's feathers 1) because they are pretty, 2) because you can see if there are any stress bars, 3) I like to have all the types of feathers to show people (flight, tail, contour, down, etc.), and 4) some people can send there feathers into a feather collecting organization to send to tribes in South America for making headdresses. They often kill birds just for their feathers, this way we can send feathers to them and the wild parrots don't have to be sacrificed. QP feathers might be too short, but larger parrot feathers are great to send!

I volunteer at a rescue that saves the feathers to give to a lady who sells them and gives the rescue half the profit. So if you're interested in donating your birds feathers, PM me and I'll give you an address to send them to.
That invitation goes out to anyone else out there too!

I too volunteer at an organization that donates all of our bird feathers to South American tribes. We don't sell them, we just give them away for free. So if anyone is interested you can certainly mail feathers to me to donate. Larger feathers are better.
Not to knock you berlie, just trying to collect feathers for our organization too

Hey now, Shannon!

How 'bout you get the big feathers and I'll take the little ones?

It doesn't matter to me, honestly. Just giving you a hard time.
I think it would be cool to see what the South American Tribes make with them ~ Do you have any pictures? I wanna see, I wanna see !

I save my macaws feathers for no other reason then they are pretty

I have made Dodger(qp) a few toys with them but since he is afraid of the color red it didn't work so well

If you two want to figure out who wins the feather duel I may have a few to send to one of you

Or really could send some to both of you.
Do they have to be perfect? Sometimes the ends are curled a bit..Sebastion grabbing at Shelby's kinda like curling a ribbon with a pair of scissors. Also not to many tail feathers the kids like taking them to school and giving them to their friends. That and the neighborhood kids ask for them.

Hey I will attach a pic I just found online for now. Since you all are interested I will try to get some info on the organization we donate them to and some pics
"This feather headdress was made from the tail feathers of Hyacinth Macaws, Red & Green Macaws, Blue-fronted Parrots and a large raptor."
Haha Berlie, I think we can work something out

and no Angie, they don't have to be perfect, just in good condition.

Oooooooooh that's beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
The feathers the rescue will accept can even be the cut-offs from a trimming.

And this is a weird use for feathers -
I am a professional musician - I play the oboe. Some oboists use turkey feathers to clean out the inside of their oboes after playing. I remember when I was in college in Philly I used to go to a place called the "South African Feather Company" to get my turkey feathers. I use a cotton swab now, though.

Tekisha --I'm not at all perfect when it comes to making art with our birdies feathers; however I have made a lot of designs for members on here from their own birds' feathers....Below are a few I've made....

That's beautiful artwork!! Thanks for sharing.
I usually glue some of my budgies' feathers in birthday cards. But I never did a fancy design like you do.
I will try to be more creative.

Hey Julie, where have you been hiding your art? The only ones I have seen are the first two for Willie and Twiz.
Those are really good.
