Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum, and have a question. I have three cockateils. I have always loved the quakers, but have never had the opportunity to purchase one. I now have found two that have been together for about 4yrs. A friend would like one of them. They are not a mating pair,so that is not a problem. I will only seperate them if it would not emotionally hurt them. I was hoping that having three other birds, that maybe it would help them with a seperation. I need some advice. Thank You for your help. Kari

Hello and welcome to the forum.Being rather new to Quakers myself,I'm not knowledgeable enough to help you with seperating the two Quakers, but there's a wealth of knowledge here from lots of good folks and I'm sure a few will be along shortly to help you smile.gif

This is a tough question. Lots depends on the birds and their personalities. I have one bird of a pair that were caged together and he and his cage mate did fine with the separation. I have another Quaker and their cages are next to one another and I let them have supervised play time together so that may have helped. Is there a way you can do a "trial run" and see how the birds react? I'm sure someone on here has more experience with this and they'll be along shortly. Off the top of my head, Dee, Majj, and Cheryl Allen and Andy's Mom come to mind as well as Julie. You can try and PM them. Dee, Majj and Cheryl are moderators and Andy's Mom and Julie are on here a lot posting so you should be able to catch them if they miss this post somehow and don't respond. Good luck and I just want to say welcome and I think it's great that you're checking this out before doing it. Let us know how things go!

Hi everyone, I really need some more help on this subject. I spoke to the woman that has these two Quakers. The response that I get will help me to determine whether I should go ahead with purchasing these Two birds

My man and I bought a Quaker parrot and a year later we bought a young Sun conure.
Gradually we put the two together under supervision as we wanted them to become (hopefully)
friends. Over a good period of time they have become bonded and fast friends. They both
love us very much and never ever give my man or myself a hard time. They now live together
in the same cage (used to stay in seperate cages). They do not prefer one another over us
so its worked out very Nicely!
I see No reason why two birds cannot stay together for mental happiness (grooming etc) if it
dosent present any problems with your handling them.

I used to have two cockatiels but one died leaving Cassie by herself. She had a really hard time w/o her cage mate. Became quiet, withdrawn and it was like I had a brand new bird that I had to resocialize. I think it also depends on the birds. I too would give it a trial run. Cassie is doing great now but it took a few months to get her back to normal.
